TRI-STATE INVITATIONAL: Freshman keeps Trojan title hopes afloat
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 8 years, 1 month AGO
COEUR d’ALENE — As a freshman at the Tri-State Invitational, Post Falls wrestler A.J. De La Rosa was just kind of thrown into the mix at 120 pounds with the idea of either sinking or swimming on the first day of competition.
He not only swam, but he’s helping his team chase a three-peat, advancing to the semifinal round today, starting at noon.
“A.J. was a great surprise to the semis,” said Post Falls coach Pete Reardon, whose team leads the 60-team tournament with 130.5 points and seven semifinalists. “A.J. drew the fifth seed out of the gate, showed tremendous heart and it was really cool to see him get a win.”
De La Rosa trailed Clayton Gilliam of North Central 7-0 before rallying for an 11-9 decision in overtime.
Ridge Lovett (106 pounds), Jordan Grimm (113), Braydon Huber (145), Jason Burchell (138), Wyatt Shelly (152) and Brad Noesen (220) also advanced to the semis after winning their first three matches on Friday.
“I’ve told them you’ve got to beat a tough dude at some point,” Reardon said. “We’ve got a bit of an advantage but it’s going to be somewhat close. Havre (which is second with 108 points) is really tough and has some great kids in the semifinals and they’re going to be able to score some points.”
Sam Edelblute (98), Alex Edelblute (98), William Edelblute (113), Larry Johnson (138) and Jared Walker (195) advanced to the semis for Lakeland, which is sixth with 91.5 points.
“All of those guys have wrestled to their seed thus far,” Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said. “Alex was unseeded and knocked out the No. 2 seed. The kids all wrestled hard and everyone is carrying their weight and wrestling to their potential. Hopefully they’ll keep it up.”
Andrew Olvera of Lake City and Casey Randles of Coeur d’Alene advanced to the 182-pound semifinals.
The championship finals are tentatively scheduled for 5 p.m.
