Signs of the season

It’s a simple house in a simple neighborhood, but it comes to life with the spirit of Christmas, family and all that goes with the holiday season.

The Christmas lights bring a moment of truth to a world awaiting change in the not so distant future. Its simplicity is not unlike the manger where Christ was born, the true nature of this time of year and the celebration in the Christian world.

The string of blue, yellow, turquoise, purple and yellow lights running the length of the home constructed in the post-World War II era sparkle like the stars, blinking on and off like the hopes and dreams of the people who live in this working-class neighborhood.

Each color on the string has a meaning of sorts, but the meaning is not always clear, kind of like life in so many ways. Two stars secure the left-hand side of the decor, bringing to life the spirit of Christmas and ensuring those dreams do stay within reach.

The candy cane and snowman in the yard remind us all of the time when Christmas was a wonder and the innocence and purity of the snow that showcases the scene. The circle of lights and snowman in the window give an ambiance of serenity in a quiet neighborhood.

This scene is a welcome sight to a street where only street lights to light the darkness.

From another angle, the scene takes on a sense of a brightness that turns the darkness into light, much like the promise of better things to come. Two twisting tree stands, lighted in their swirls and twirls shine in all their glory, illuminating a scene of snowmen and lights on the ground below.

Yes, it is a display of hope and light in the darkness, illuminating a simple home in a simple neighborhood where working-class people raise their children, live their lives, dream their dreams.

It is a display that makes Moses Lake a better place, a place where life is good, and hopes and dreams are within reach for those who work for them.
