COEUR d’ALENE — Knowing full well that as the lone finalist for the Post Falls Trojans in the Tri-State Invitational every point mattered when it came to the team score, sophomore Ridge Lovett did what he always seems to do.

Get the job done.

But on this weekend, it was a team from Havre, Mont., thanks to a pin in the 220-pound final that knocked the Trojans off the top of the Tri-State standings for the first time in three years.

Havre won with 184 points, compared to 182.5 from the Trojans. Lakeland was fourth.

“The truth of it today was we didn’t deserve to win today,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “We got outwrestled. Hats off to them, they were clutch when they needed to be. They outwrestled us today.”

Lovett pinned Chase Tebbets of Mead in 3 minutes, 27 seconds to win the 106-pound title, his second straight at the tournament which brings in the top teams from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana.

“The second title was better by far,” Lovett said. “The team race was so close that I knew I had to get it done.”

Immediately following his match, the team race got a little more separation as Havre lost in the 113-pound final to keep the Trojans’ lead at 10 points.

“We were all hyped up and I knew I had to get a pin to help secure it,” Lovett said. “I had a good warmup with A.J. (De La Rosa), and a good talk with the coaches and was ready to go.”

In his 182-pound championship match, Coeur d’Alene senior Casey Randles — who won while at Sandpoint last year — had to win a dogfight, beating Trevor Seen of Mead High in Spokane 6-5 to become the first wrestler at Tri-State to win for two different schools.

“He’s always aggressive, but the guy he was facing came out with a gameplan to frustrate him,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “What I told Casey is that everyone you wrestle is going to do that. He’s a competitor and wants to keep scoring as many points as he can. He lost his composure a little bit, but he’ll learn from that. He was fine, but just let the guy frustrate him a little bit.”

Seen tried to slow the tempo of the match.

“I got too much in my head,” Randles said. “If I can get out of my head, I’m fine. But Trevor wrestled a good match and I got frustrated and wrestled poorly. I’m not happy with the win because I wanted to wrestle better and I will the next time I see him.”

Randles won by pin at 182 in 2015 while at Sandpoint.

“It’s really special to win this,” Randles said. “I’ve always wanted to win this tournament since I was a little kid.”

Lovett won the title at 98 pounds last year.

“This one, it was about the team,” Lovett said. “Doing it with the team and for the team is way better than any individual title because I’d rather win with them. Usually, if I win, I win, but if I won this time, then the team had a shot to win. I’m wrestling for them, not just me.”

Lovett won all four matches at Tri-State by pin.

“Ridge was awesome,” Reardon said. “And the kid he wrestled is really tough. Not to take anything away from him, but Ridge went out there with a purpose and found a way to get him on his back. In big matches, he finds a way to elevate his level and he’s just a clutch kid.”

“Just tried to push the pace in practice all week,” said Lovett, who remains undefeated in high school. “Just going hard and having long matches in practice and making sure I had enough in the tank to finish this weekend.”

Other Post Falls placers include: Jordan Grimm (sixth at 113), A.J. De La Rosa (fifth at 120), Matt McLeod (fifth at 126), Jason Burchell (fourth at 138), Braydon Huber (fourth at 145), Micah McLeod (seventh at 152), Wyatt Shelly (fifth at 152) and Brad Noesen (fifth at 220).

After a third-place showing in last year’s event, Lakeland junior Larry Johnson was focused on getting better with his endurance in 2016.

And he did just that for about 5 minutes, 50 seconds in the 138-pound final. That last 10 seconds allowed Lakeside senior Dalton Young to escape and score two late points to win 5-4, becoming only the third four-time champion at Tri-State, joining Sandpoint’s Jared Lawrence and Hermiston’s Samuel Colbray.

“I knew he was a stud going into the match,” said Johnson, who won a Tri-State title as a freshman. “I’ve been preparing all year for him, because I knew he was going to be in my way and I really wanted to beat him. I just wanted it. It was a close match.”

Johnson won twice by major decision, once by pin and another time by decision to reach the finals.

“I just came more prepared this year,” Johnson said. “We’ve came a long way as a team. It’s been a long time since we’ve had three guys in the Tri-State finals.”

For Lakeland sophomore Sam Edelblute — nephew of coach Rob Edelblute — he missed out on placing by one round as a freshman.

This time around, he found himself under the title spotlight, losing to Chase Randall of Mead 10-3.

“I felt strong against all the kids I faced,” Sam Edelblute said. “I don’t really know what happened in the championship match. I didn’t expect him to be that tough.”

For Lakeland senior Jared Walker, who finished seventh at Tri-State in 2015, he came close to that title in his final try, losing to Kione Gill of Tahoma 5-1 at 195.

“I wrestled really well the last two days,” Walker said. “Until the finals match, and I’m extremely disappointed with how I wrestled in the finals. I didn’t wrestle how I wanted to and didn’t prepare the right way. It just wasn’t a good finish for me.”

Lakeland finished fourth in the tournament with 149.5 points. Other placers for the Hawks were: Alex Edelblute (third at 98), William Edelblute (third at 113) and Brian Edelblute (sixth at 126).

“They wrestled hard,” Rob Edelblute said. “I’m really proud of them. We’ve been telling them that everyone on the team is going to have to make some noise, as well as at state, if we’re going to have a chance, and they did just that. They wrestled their hearts out. There were a couple of heartbreakers in the finals. We’ve been building with our club and junior high, and everything is coming together. We’re one of the smallest schools at the 4A level, and to come here and finish fourth, that’s a huge accomplishment.”

Alex Marshall of Coeur d’Alene finished third to help the Vikings to a tie for 15th with Polson, Mont.

Andrew Olvera was fifth at 182 and Griffin Schoch seventh at 160 for Lake City, which finished 36th.

Owen Stebbins was eighth at 182 for Sandpoint, which finished 39th.
