Coeur d’Alene High junior quarterback Colson Yankoff was named 5A Player of the Year by The Idaho Statesman newspaper of Boise, and St. Maries senior defensive end Nate Masterson was tabbed 2A Player of the Year.

Also, St. Maries coach Craig Tefft was named 2A Coach of the Year.

Yankoff, who committed to Oregon last summer but recently decommitted following a coaching change, passed for 3,154 yards and 27 touchdowns with six interceptions this season, and rushed for 978 yards and 27 TDs, averaging 8.8 yards per carry.

“He is the best player I’ve seen in this state in the last seven years,” Rocky Mountain coach Scott Criner told the Statesman. “He is a treat to watch play the game.”

“Colson is the total package as far as skills, leadership and work ethic,” Coeur d’Alene coach Shawn Amos said.

Locals named to the 5A second team were Coeur d’Alene senior offensive lineman Mike McIntire, Post Falls senior defensive lineman Nate DeGraw and Coeur d’Alene senior linebacker Jackson Sumner.

In 3A, Priest River senior linebacker Tommy Anselmo was named to the second team.

Masterson had 74 tackles, including 19 tackles for loss and seven sacks for St. Maries.

“The best player I have ever had to play and plan against,” Bear Lake coach Ryan Messerly said.

Tefft coached St. Maries to its first state title.

St. Maries had several players named to the 2A first team — two of them on both sides of the ball — including senior quarterback Kiefer Gibson, senior wide receiver/defensive back Jake Sieler, senior tight end/defensive lineman Brady Martin, junior offensive lineman Parker Telford, senior defensive lineman Donaven Rottini and senior linebackers Zack Rouse and Kaleb Brown.

St. Maries senior defensive back Dylan Edwards was named to the second team.

The Statesman announced its teams recently, following a poll of coaches statewide.
