Twice a month a group of tech-minded, entrepreneurial citizens gather to discuss trends, concepts and sip coffee in a refurbished Sherman Avenue basement.

Wednesday morning's gathering, hosted by Innovation Collective, was typical for all but one reason.

An incoming Kootenai County commissioner was in the room.

Chris Fillios, who begins his first term in January, is focused on economic growth and has an extensive tech background, each aligning with Innovation Collective's mission of leading the area through the journey of becoming a startup hub.

Fillios wants to help the county provide the sort of infrastructure to accommodate more tech-based business and attract talented engineers, but is aware it's a chicken and egg-type of situation.

"There's such a sell to this area, but we fall short," Fillios said. "We need a promotional campaign in North Idaho. The Innovation Collective wants to do that in wanting to bring tech startups here. It can be vital for our area."

From the early 1970s to the late 1980s, Fillios worked in telecommunication, digital equipment and sales marketing before a successful career in real estate.

Innovation Collective founder Nick Smoot didn't expect Fillios to be in attendance Wednesday. Smoot is impressed with Fillios' background and his vigor for wanting to boost the area's economy.

"We're excited to collaborate with government officials who want a forward-thinking economy," Smoot said. "Chris understands the need for embracing a new economy and wants to help."
