RENO, Nev. — Sam Edelblute (98 pounds), William Edelblute (113), Larry Johnson (138) and Jared Walker (195) went unbeaten on the first day to advance in the championship bracket of the 92-team Sierra Nevada Classic at the Reno Livestock Events Center.

Lakeland is sixth in the tournament, with Brian Edelblute (126) still alive in the consolation bracket.

“All of our kids came in and wrestled hard,” Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said. “They’ve started to realize we can hang with this level of kids. Some of our younger guys have stepped up and won some matches, and you couldn’t ask for more.”

The tournamant concludes today.

ROCKFORD, Wash. — A buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Steffanie Kiourkas gave the Crusaders of Colbert, Wash., a hard-fought win over the Lumberjacks in the Freeman holiday tournament.

“It was a great game, the lead went back and forth quite a bit,” St. Maries coach Jay Sines said. “It was tied and they had the ball with 14 seconds left when (Lumberjack junior) Devyn Wilson put us ahead with a steal and a lay-in.

“But they got the ball up court and (Kiourkas) hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer.”

Wilson led all scorers with 18 points and four blocked shots, while senior Kelsey Auer added eight points and seven rebounds for St. Maries (6-3). Natalie Smith led Northwest Christian with 15 points.
