QUINCY — The Quincy girls just didn’t have an answer for the Prosser size in the paint during Tuesday night’s Central Washington Athletic Conference game coming out of the Christmas break.

Cox, a 6-foot-1 senior post player, and Brooke Wheeler, a 5-11 junior, also listed as a post, but more of a power forward, ran the floor well and ran the Lady Jacks out of the gym. Cox had 8, Wheeler finished with 14. Marissa Cortes 21, including three from 3-point range for the Mustangs.

“We’re getting better, the girls are working hard,” Quincy coach Cory Medina said. “The girls are taking better shots. We’re trying to get them to not be afraid to take the shot and be aggressive.”

The Jacks (2-6, 0-5) played a little better to open the fourth quarter, finding some success with two defensive stands to open the final eight minutes. Erica Camacho had a nice block on Alyah Martin’s shot as the 5-4 guard drove the lane, but Cox picked up the loose ball for the put-back underneath.

Even when Prosser went to the bench in the final three minutes, Quincy struggled with Ashley Magana, a 5-11 reserve.

“That’s a good team and we didn’t have an answer for their big kids tonight,” Medina said. “We have the two non-conference wins and we’re getting better. We just have to have that faith in each other that we can close out games and finish with the win.”

The Mustangs (7-1, 6-0) showed why they are contending for a CWAC title, opening a 43-15 lead after three quarters. When they got the running game going they were tough to stop.

“This team definitely has the talent, but the big thing for us is mental,” said Hailey McKee, who finished with four points, including a 3-pointer. “I think we’re playing with more confidence and we started to play better defense at the end and playing more aggressive.”
