LOREN BENOIT/Press Post Falls guard Matt Fleming gains possession of a loose ball during Wednesday night’s game against Kentridge.

COEUR d’ALENE — For a team that had a 19-day wait before taking the floor — not its fault — the Post Falls boys basketball team didn’t exactly leave it right after 32 minutes had expired.

It took a little longer, but the Trojans found a way, beating the Kentridge Chargers of Kent, Wash., 82-77 in overtime on the opening day of the Lake City Holiday Invitational at Lake City High.

Jake Pfennigs had 27 points and 14 rebounds for Post Falls (5-1), which had been out of action since Dec. 9 after having games postponed due to weather.

“We had some guys play some big minutes and contribute in a big way,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “We’ve got a lot of inexperience in settings like this, but games like this, they’re a good one. We’re very appreciative of (Lake City basketball coach) Jim (Winger) and the staff for putting this on. Having a chance to play in these kinds of games, this is why we come to tournaments like this.”

Drake Thompson had 18 points and four steals and Colby Gennett had 11 points and four assists for Post Falls, which faces Columbia River tonight at 7 at Lake City High.

Markel Banks scored 34 points for Kentridge, which faces Mountain Home today.

Mountain Home 55

Lakeland 34

COEUR d’ALENE — Lakeland High School is on winter break, but that doesn’t mean the boys basketball team won’t learn anything this week.

Coach Dave Stockwell is counting on it after his Hawks committed dozens of turnovers in a 55-34 loss to Mountain Home in the opener of the Lake City Invitational tournament.

“We don’t handle pressure well,” Stockwell said. “That’s been our problem all year, and until we figure out a game plan (against pressure) we’re going to struggle.

“But I guess that’s the idea of playing in a tournament like this — you hope to learn something and improve, because it’s a long season.”

The Tigers (3-5) rattled Lakeland (2-7) from the opening tip with their full-court press and half-court trapping defense. They scored their first four baskets off turnovers, with 6-foot-6 post Tyrig Perry slamming home a fast-break dunk to put Mountain Home ahead 8-0 two minutes into the game.

Despite playing limited minutes due to foul trouble, Perry scored 12 points and helped the Tigers shut down Lakeland’s offense in the paint.

“When our big man’s on the court, you have to account for him,” Mountain Home coach Brion Bethel said. “He draws a lot of double-teams and that makes it easier for our shooters.”

Guard AJ Woodruff (15 points) and wing Marcus Egusquiza (10 points) took advantage of that attention, as Egusquiza’s post drive put the Tigers ahead 22-11 midway through the second quarter.

Lakeland rallied just before intermission, as a 3-pointer from Dylan Knight, a putback by Tyler Blood and Kaden Davis’ drive to the basket pulled the Hawks within 26-18 at halftime.

Unfortunately for them, Mountain Home turned up the defensive pressure to start the third quarter and went on an 11-2 run to take control of the game.

Junior Dylan Vahey kept Lakeland within striking distance early with his scoring (12 points) and rebounding (five), while Knight added eight points for the Hawks.

“Dylan played solid for us. He’s been consistant in practice and in games,” Stockwell said. “And Max Baker played hard and hustled all game off the bench.”

Lakeland returns to action at 2 p.m. today against South Kitsap, while Mountain Home faces Kentridge at 3:30 p.m.

Despite a 12-hour drive north riddled with road closures and rough weather, Bethel is happy to bring his team back to Lake City’s tournament.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to see some different types of defenses, to see some different opponents,” Bethel said. “It’s a well-run tournament and we love playing here.”
