Graduates of Whitefish High School face a very different world today than we did 20, 30, 40 and more years ago.

As they graduate and move on to post secondary training, college, and career opportunities it is critical that we prepare all students with the skills, attitudes and dispositions needed to be successful. This is the fundamental role of public schools. Learning how to learn could be the most essential skill that we equip our students with as they move on to experience life beyond high school.

Project Lead the Way courses at Whitefish High School that do just that. Take a peek into Ms. Sullivan’s biomedical science or Mr. Ross’ human body systems classrooms where students deeply explore the human body, investigating real cases and assuming the role of a biomedical professional. Mr. Herbert’s computer science and software engineering course develops computational thinking and student projects include app development and cyber-security. Introduction to engineering design offered by Mr. Boyle asks students to apply concepts of math, science, and engineering standards to design solutions to solve a variety of problems.

Head over to Mr. Sawtelle’s GIS class where students use inquiry-based methods to provide solutions to problems facing our community and region. Recently, GIS students participated in a significant research project in Priest River, Idaho, and through their data analysis determined the impacts of different types of forest management on tree re-growth. In addition, they have taken on analyzing the impact of adjusting bus transportation for students in Whitefish Schools — a real problem that we are working hard to find solutions for with the help of our students.

These are just a few examples of what is happening in Whitefish High School that help students learn how to learn. Teachers at Muldown Elementary and Whitefish Middle School lay the foundation for these skills in our youngest learners. As facilitators of learning, our teachers inspire, motivate and encourage learning how to learn for all students.
