$1.5M claim is filed over shooting

SANDPOINT — The family of a Sandpoint man who was killed by law enforcement last summer is seeking $1.5 million in damages for wrongful death and unnecessary use of excessive force.

Casey George Alarcon, 34, was killed when authorities say he opened fire on law officers who were serving an arrest warrant. The shooting happened on Aug. 11, 2015, in the 1000 block of Ruth Avenue.

The tort claim was filed on Tuesday, according to 1st District Court records. It seeks damages from the city and its police department, in addition to the county and its sheriff’s office. Damages are also being sought from Bonner County EMS and Bonner General Health.
