HAYDEN — The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office is trying to nail down who has been causing all the mischief at the intersection of Lancaster and Strahorn roads in Hayden.

The KCSO has responded to the intersection more than 10 times since last July for nails that had been thrown in the road and damaged several tires.

The most recent incident was reported Tuesday morning just after 10 when a caller reported finding more than 20 nails at the location. There have been at least five separate incidents in the past two weeks.

KCSO Lt. Stu Miller said it has been roofing nails that have been dumped in all of the cases.

"It seems to be happening during the daylight hours," Miller said, adding that no suspects or suspect vehicles have been identified.

The KCSO is increasing patrols in the area and exploring other options to locate a suspect.

When a deputy was patrolling the area on Friday night due to the recent incidents, about 20 nails were found in the westbound turn lane of Lancaster.

"The nails were in the same location as the other incidents and appeared to be the same type of nail," the deputy wrote in a report.

A resident who lives near the intersection picked up about about 150 nails at the intersection during separate incidents since the problem began last summer and turned them over to the KCSO.
