The Polson wrestling team took second at the state meet.

Lake County athletes had an impressive showing at the All-Class State Championships in Billings this past weekend. Ronan’s Jared Neiss was the highest placing wrestler in the area, winning the Class BC championship in the 145 weight class. His teammate, Hunter Peterson, came in second in the 113 weight class. At least one athlete from each local team placed, and as a team, the Polson Pirates took second place behind Havre.

The Pirates had a great tournament. Besides placing second as a team, the Pirates had four wrestlers place third and four who placed fourth. After having tough luck in the semifinal rounds coach Bob Owen said, “We were sitting in sixth place after that championship semifinal round. We gathered up the troops and asked them to put aside their disappointments and finish business so that they could achieve their team goal. The toughest match in wrestling comes after that semifinal loss, when you know you can not be in the finals going for first. I was just amazed at how they rallied for that round. We had either pins or bonus points in each match. We blew back into second and made it impossible for any other team to catch us as we went ahead of the third place team by 35 points. Everyone on the team contributed team points, even the four that did not place.”

In the 103 weight class, Mateo Quinones wrestled his way to the semifinals before falling to Adam Bankert of Livingston. After winning his next match, Quinones faced a very familiar face in RJ Pierre. The two had previously met in the divisional championship. Pierre also wrestled in the semifinals and lost before winning his next match to meet up with Quinones. In the third place match, Quinones defeated his teammate in a 18-5 decision to take third while Pierre settled for fourth.

At 120, Bridger Wenzel pinned his first two opponents before falling in the semifinals to Caleb Birdwell in the semifinals. Wenzel then defeated a Lewistown opponent to head into the third place match, where he won by decision over an opponent he had already wrestled in the tournament to take third place.

Cameron Brown was the fourth Pirate to place third at state. He pinned his first opponent then won in a close decision to head to the semifinal match in the 132 weight class. In the semis, Brown lost a heartbreaker to Clayton Barter of Laurel in a tie breaker. He regrouped to win himself a chance at third place, where he won in a 3-0 decision over Hunter Peterson of Columbia Falls.

Jaben Wenzel took the long way around for his third place finish. Wenzel lost in the first round before pinning his next three opponents, two of whom took less than 50 seconds. After defeating Pat Comstock of Billings Central, Wenzel defeated Cody Warner of Frenchtown/Alberton in a narrow decision to take home third place in the 138 weight class.

Thunder Morales took fourth place for the Pirates in the 126 weight class. He pinned his first opponent, then lost in a 4-2 decision to Ben Windauer of Columbia Falls. Morales would then fight back through the consolation bracket, pinning three opponents. In the third place match, Morales met back up with Ben Windauer. Windauer would get the best of Morales again, pinning him to leave Morales with a fourth place medal.

In the 145 weight class, Parker Adler won his first two matches to head to the semifinal match. Adler was pinned by Jared Degen, but fought his way back through the backside of the consolation bracket to wrestling in the third place match. In that match, Adler was defeated by Brenden Roan of Hardin to finish the season with a fourth place medal.

In the last wrestling season of his high school career, Mike Corrigan started out strong, pinning his first two opponents to advance into the semifinals. There, he lost by decision 9-3 to Hunter Severson of Sidney/Bainville. After a big win in the consolation semis, Corrigan took on Justin Hinson of Hamilton/Victor for third place. In an extremely tight match, Hinson came out on top by decision 3-2.

In the 152 weight class, Colton Cote won his first match by pinning his opponents before losing in a tough match to send him into the backside of the bracket. He pinned Colton Sweeney to continue on, but lost in a tight 6-3 decision to Bridger Coffman of Sidney/Bainville to end his season.

Koby Garcia also won his first match, then was defeated in the quarterfinals. He won his next by decision before losing to Tyler Clapp of Glendive to end his season.

In the 182 weight class, Noah Humphrey lost his first match then won his next in a nail-biter over a Columbia Falls opponent in overtime. Unfortunately Humphrey would lose another close match to go 1-2 in the tournament.

In the heavyweight class, Nick Marquardt lost his first match, then received a bye. In his next, Marquardt lost to a familiar foe in Whitefish’s Steven Quimby to go 1-2 in the tournament.
