Ronan 64 Florence 53

In a battle between the top two teams in the conference, the Maidens came out fast and furious. They took a 21-6 lead after the first quarter. For the rest of the game, Florence matched them with points, but the Maidens never let Florence cut into the lead, which hovered around 15 points for most of the game. Only when Ronan let some of their younger players take over did the Falcons cut into that lead with a few minutes left in the game. During the course of the game, sophomore starter Micalann McCrea scored her 400th career point and Alicia Camel brought in her 100th varsity career rebound. She also led all scorers with 20 points, followed by 17 from Lee Camel.

Cheyenne Nagy had two 3’s and Mikaylan Roylance added another in the first quarter to put the Vikings up by four points. In the second, Charlo continued their assault, working the ball around to break down Arlee’s defense. They took a five point lead at halftime. In the third, the Scarlets switched up their defense, playing a box and one on Nagy. Arlee scored 20 and held the Vikings to just five in the third quarter. At one point, coach Bret Thompson put in his entire bench to try and get things going for Charlo, but Arlee had their number. In the fourth the Vikings struggled to get shots to fall and Arlee took the win, 52-32.

Last week, the Vikings took another hit to their team as they lost their second player to a knee injury. Freshman Tyrah Hammond was injured in their game against Philipsburg, and freshman Teaira Truman recently had knee surgery. Both freshmen were seeing significant playing time on the varsity team.

Polson 27 Bigfork 58

By John Heglie

At Polson last Thursday, the host Lady Pirates were subjected to an experience similar to the plight of the Titanic when they were iced by a collision with some Bergs. After averaging four dozen in their preceding games against class B opponents, the visiting Valkyries victimized, then vanquished Polson by means of all-state 5-11 Lana Berg and 6-0 Jaime Berg, who combined to nearly counter home team point productivity. Further complicating matters were tangles with their tallest trajectory tormentor, 6-2 post Miranda Campbell. Trailing by teens after the first frame, the Lady Pirates narrowed the lead within ten, 27-17, and were poised on the precipice of whittling down the deficit further into single figures. But the culmination of Val steals in the high teens along with half a dozen blocks would rupture the hull of crucial Polson scoring opportunities.

Shifting perspective to brighter tones, Nichole Lake turned in a double-double, while the backcourt trio of Brenna Clarke, Marlee Congdon and Lauren Lefthand collaborated upon nine points and seven steals.

Polson 42 Libby 38

At Libby after a stark start, the visiting Lady Pirates strung together their second highest sequence of consecutive double digit quarters this season to rally past host 7B Libby in the final frame.

Senior guard Brenna Clarke claimed game high scoring honors with a dozen points for a new varsity career high as well as lifted lots of Lady Logger loot with eight steals.

Lauren Lefthand, Nichole Lake and Kaelyn Smith collaborated upon another two dozen tallied into the treasure trove of the team.

Polson (5-12) hosts visiting Whitefish for Senior Night on Thursday, February 18 with an opportunity to net their first conference win. The Lady Pirates could flip the script in the lower strata of the conference hierarch with a three point victory or better, thereby relegating the Lady Bulldogs to the doghouse of the standings by leapfrogging over them into third place. Polson lost their previous encounter in the final seconds 33-31 on account of a pair of late steals that were cashed in at the free throw line to capture the contest.
