SANDPOINT — The number of fatal bicycle accidents nationwide is trending upward, according to a recent study by the Governors Highway Safety Association. GHSA also reported a marked increase in the frequency of urban bike accidents.

This is partly due to more commuters switching to pedal power — an increase of 62 percent since 2000, according to U.S. Census Bureau statistics. Another contributing factor could be the ongoing conflict between cyclists and motorists over road rights, which "Outside" magazine called "the deadly war nobody's winning" in its February 2015 issue.
