A man with a history of crime and threatening people in the Flathead Valley is being detained by authorities in connection with a Monday stabbing at a residence south of Kalispell.  

Robert Wayne Snide, Jr., 31, is being held as a fugitive from justice and on misdemeanor charges of theft and criminal contempt. Flathead Sheriff Chuck Curry anticipates that charges of felony assault with a weapon will be filed for the stabbing incident soon.

According to Curry, deputies responded Monday night to a home where a 34-year-old man had multiple stab wounds. Deputies learned that the victim had been in a dispute with a roommate, Snide, who allegedly stabbed the man.

Snide has absconded from probation in Michigan, where he is serving a probationary sentence for felony larceny of a building in 2011. He has discharged a Michigan felony assault conviction from 2002, as well as a felony conviction from 2010 for operating a methamphetamine lab.

Two community members filed for orders of protection in Flathead District Court this summer and fall because Snide allegedly threatened them on multiple occasions. According to the petitions for protection, one of which was granted in November, Snide threatened the father of his girlfriend’s children multiple times.

“Robert Snide has threatened to stab and shoot me, to take my daughter off the street while she rides her bike,” Cory Calhoun wrote. “I fear for my family’s lives, scared to let my kids outside.”

A social media message provided in the order of protection’s file allegedly was sent by Snide to Calhoun and read: “I’m playing for keeps Cory and I won’t loose a wink of sleep if your heart stops beating. Alright? Got my word on it [expletive]. So you leave her alone.”

Calhoun was not involved in Monday’s stabbing.

In addition, Snide  was charged Wednesday with felony theft.

According to court documents, a suspicious-person call on Dec. 1 led an officer to Snide who was sitting in the driver’s seat of a Chevy Tahoe at a gas station in Whitefish. Snide allegedly told the officer that his friend was inside the store trying to steal doughnuts. Snide was taken into custody for driving without a license.

The truck was taken into custody and searched. Acetylene tanks and other construction gear stolen on Nov. 29 from a construction site was located. The owner of the equipment was able to identify it as stolen.

Snide is set for an arraignment on Jan. 7 in Flathead District Court.
