COEUR d'ALENE — The Kootenai County Prosecutor's Office filed a notice of intent to seek the death penalty against the man accused of murdering Coeur d'Alene police Sgt. Greg Moore in May.

Aggravating circumstances in the first-degree murder case against Jonathan Renfro exist because Moore was acting in his official duty when he was shot and killed, according to a notice filed by prosecutors in 1st District Court.

County Prosecutor Barry McHugh declined Monday to comment on the decision. The deadline for his decision was Monday.

Renfro, 27, of Rathdrum, is also charged with grand theft, removing a law-enforcement officer's firearm, concealing evidence, robbery and eluding police.

Prosecutors had through October and November to make the decision, then received an extension from the court that also gave them December. The clock started on the decision after Renfro pleaded not guilty to the felony charges at his arraignment.

"Certainly all of our hearts and thoughts are with Sgt. Moore's and Mr. Renfro's families," Chief Public Defender John Adams said Monday. "I'm saddened to learn that once again the Kootenai County prosecutor has decided to engage our community in the institutional killing of a civilian prisoner."

A jury trial is scheduled to start Sept. 6.

Renfro allegedly admitted shooting Moore in the face in a Coeur d'Alene neighborhood. Moore had stopped Renfro, who was walking down a sidewalk in the middle of the night. Moore called in Renfro's driver's license information to central dispatch moments before the shooting.

Renfro also is accused of stealing Moore's gun and patrol car and fleeing at high speeds toward the Idaho-Washington state line, where he ditched Moore's car and fled on foot through a field.

He was soon found hiding under a trailer parked near a Walmart Supercenter, authorities have said.
