POST FALLS — There’s no such thing as a night off in competition in the 5A Inland Empire League.
Granted, you can have an off night shooting the ball, but it often ends up in a losing effort.
Sophomore guard Bayley Brennan scored a game-high 15 points — the final six coming from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter — as the Trojans rallied past the Lake City Timberwolves 49-38 on Thursday at The Arena.
“We had some things we wanted to do, and the kids executed them perfectly,” Post Falls coach Marc Allert said. “I thought defensively, we were really good tonight. To hold that team to 38 points, that’s an awesome effort by our team.”
Sophomore guard Abby Gennett added 13 points for Post Falls (9-6, 2-0 5A IEL), which has won four of its last five games.
“Abby played great tonight,” Allert said. “Her attacking the basket was a difference-maker. Bayley did a great job of running things on offense and getting us into what we wanted to run and controlled the tempo of the game. I thought our guards played really, really well.”
Post Falls opened a 12-4 lead after the first quarter, then fell behind after Lake City rallied to take a 22-17 halftime lead.
“We definitely had a rough time finding the basket tonight,” Lake City coach Bryan Kelly said. “Give credit to Post Falls, they came out and outworked us. We went to block out Melody (Kempton) and she kept finding a way to the ball and we didn’t utilize what we’re good at and we started jacking up shots. We’ve got a lot to learn. We’ve got to get the ball down to where we’re the strongest — and that’s down low — and we can’t start jacking shots just to get back into the game.”
Lake City held a 31-26 lead after the third, then went cold from the floor again, being outscored 23-7 in the final quarter.
“In the second quarter I thought we battled back and played pretty laxed and uninspired in the second half,” Kelly said. “We got into some foul trouble, and that’s what happens. In IEL basketball, you’ve got to show up every night. Nobody is going to just hand you the game. They just outworked us, outplayed us and Marc does a great job with his team.”
Kempton had 15 rebounds and eight points for Post Falls, which hosts Glacier High of Kalispell, Mont., tonight at 7.
“Mel’s in a tough spot because they know where we want the ball to go,” Allert said. “And she still does her thing out there.”
Post Falls hadn’t played a league game since Dec. 1, a 49-42 win at Lewiston.
“Thought we made some big strides tonight, but we’re not satisfied,” Allert said. “We know we can get better from this and have room for improvement.”
Lauren Rewers had 11 points and eight rebounds, Keara Simpson eight points and eight rebounds and Nina Carlson — who recently verbally committed to Idaho — had eight points for Lake City (12-3, 1-1 5A IEL), which visits Lewiston on Tuesday.
“We’ve got to figure it out,” Kelly said. “This is a big point in our season. We’ll learn from this and the kids will step up and change things. It’s a long way from being over so we’ve got to step up and fix this. Nina played hard and so did Lauren. Lauren got into a little bit of foul trouble and we’ve got to get them the ball. That’s what our guards need to realize.”
Post Falls hosts Glacier High of Kalispell, Mont., tonight.
