<p>The city of Coeur d’Alene will remove 10 Norway maple trees lining Northwest Boulevard in front of the Museum of North Idaho Wednesday. A wall, 3 feet high in some places, will be built where the trees are now as part of a levee-certification process.</p>
COEUR d'ALENE — The city of Coeur d'Alene on Wednesday plans to cut down 10 Norway maple trees along Northwest Boulevard in front of the Museum of North Idaho.
"It's part of the flood-work certification," said Kim Harrington, an engineering department representative for the city.
The Lake City is in the last phase of getting the levee certified by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The row of trees to be cut down starts at the south end of the museum building and continues for 285 feet north, Harrington said.
The trees are being removed to construct a wall in front of the museum. The wall will be 3 feet tall at its highest point.
"Where we would be taking the trees out — that's essentially where the wall is going to be constructed," Harrington said.
Construction of the wall is scheduled to start in April or May.
City Engineer Gordon Dobler told the city council at a December meeting he believed the city would have levee certification in the fall. He said the city is paying for the work.
City officials expect the tree removal will affect southbound traffic on Northwest Boulevard that morning.
