Donald James O’Neal was born on Aug. 11, 1929, in Coeur d’Alene to Alta May (Jackson) and James O’Neal.
Don married Phyllis Wagner in 1951. He is the father to Peggy O’Neal, Michael O’Neal and Danny O’Neal; and beloved father-in-law to Tami O’Neal. Dan and Tami live in Othello, Wash. Peggy and Mike live in Post Falls. He has six grandchildren, Jesse Grout, Jennifer (Gayton) Justin Grout, Colleen (Velazquez), Jamie O’Neal and David O’Neal. He enjoyed his 19 great-grandchildren very much.
He was in the Air Force for 20 years as an air traffic controller and computer programmer. He worked for Milwaukee railroad for 10 years as a train master in Malden, Wash., and in Coeur d’Alene.
Don went to Coeur d’Alene High School and graduated at Eastern cum laude with a dual major in business and philosophy.
Don loved playing with his dog, Sammy, and Phyllis’s cooking. He was a good painter, hunter and fisherman. He played the accordion. He loved camping and the cabin at Bead Lake.
He died of a brain bleed at Hospice House in Coeur d’Alene after a short illness.
A memorial will be held in the spring at his residence. The ashes will be spread at the lake when the roads clear.
