Republican Chris Fillios announced he will seek the District 2 Kootenai County Commission seat in the May 17 primary election.

The district includes the southern part of the county, areas around Lake Coeur d'Alene and most of Coeur d'Alene.

"I’ve had numerous people ask me to run for this seat," Fillios said. "It’s an honor to have the support, but at the same time, very humbling to know so many are willing to place their trust in me to make the right decisions for Kootenai County."

Land use will continue to be a hot topic for the county, Fillios said. As a Realtor and appraiser, Fillios said he knows both urban and rural areas of Kootenai County well. He said he understands the need to plan for growth, continuity and respecting

all involved.

The county budget will provide its own set of challenges, Fillios said. He said keeping taxes low is a priority, as is making local government more efficient.

Fillios said his years as a business owner and project manager taught him the importance of bringing people together.

"It’s amazing what you can accomplish with mutual respect and good will," he said. "Most issues can be worked out in a conciliatory manner."

Fillios is an Eastside Highway District commissioner. He is married and has two children.

Fillios has a bachelor's degree from The City College of New York and a master's degree from New York University. He is on the Coeur d'Alene Chamber of Commerce Public Policy Committee, is a past mentor for Juvenile Probation and a veteran.

Fillios is an associate broker with Tomlinson Sotheby’s International Realty.

Republican incumbent David Stewart earlier announced he'll re-seek his seat for District 2.

Candidates can officially file for candidacy for commission board seats for the primary from Feb. 29 through March 11.

Republicans Leslie Duncan, Fred Meckel and Bob Bingham earlier announced they'll seek the seat for District 3, which is in the north-central part of the county. Dan Green will not seek re-election to the seat.
