COEUR d’ALENE — The last time that the Post Falls Trojans took on the Lake City Timberwolves, Lake City freshman post Bridget Rieken was in Phoenix playing her other sport with the Coeur d’Alene Sting soccer team.

Breaking news: She’s pretty good at basketball as well.

Rieken had 10 points and eight rebounds for the Timberwolves, who held the Trojans to just three points — all on free throws — in the fourth quarter of a 38-29 win in 5A Inland Empire League play on Friday at Lake City High.

Lake City improves to 4-1 in league, while Post Falls drops to 3-1 with a home game today against Lewiston.

“We can only take care of what we can control,” Lake City coach Bryan Kelly said. “Now, we’ve got ourselves in a good spot. We’ve got a game tomorrow to work on some different things. Next Saturday, it’s a game that’s huge for us.”

In the boys game, Max McCullough scored 24 points in three quarters as the Trojans beat the Timberwolves 65-51 to improve to 2-0 in league play.

GIRLS: After falling behind 6-0, Rieken entered the game and sparked the Timberwolves, scoring six of her 10 points in the first half.

“It was a big game for us tonight and we came together and played really well,” Rieken said. “We didn’t start that great in the first half, but we picked it up in the second half. I think we realized we could do this and pulled it together in the second half.”

In the teams’ previous matchup, Post Falls topped Lake City 49-38 at The Arena on Jan. 7.

“We were up five heading to the fourth in the last game, and we completed crumbled,” Kelly said. “I told them it’s time to start finishing games and start being confident in yourself. You guys can play basketball, now go out and finish the game.”

The key on Friday — keeping fouls in check while holding Post Falls without a field goal for the final 11:43 of the game.

“We didn’t foul that much, which we had been doing a lot in the last couple of games,” Rieken said. “We didn’t get them on the line that much.”

Lake City closed the game on a 13-4 run after Lauren Rewers gave Lake City a 27-25 lead with 1:57 remaining in the third.

“We didn’t finish that game at all,” said Kelly of the previous game. “And the girls took that to heart and responded tonight.”

Lake City (15-3) hosts Glacier today, and will host Lewiston next Saturday.

Melody Kempton had eight points and nine rebounds for Post Falls (11-7), which hosts Lewiston today at 3:15.

“Tough to win a game like that when you’re not making any baskets,” Post Falls coach Marc Allert said. “Thought defensively, they came out and put a little more pressure on us, and we didn’t handle it very well.”

Post Falls beat Lewiston at Booth Hall 49-42 on Dec. 1.

Post Falls 11 9 6 3 — 29

Lake City 10 9 10 8 — 38

POST FALLS — Gardiner 0, Morris 4, Gennett 5, Brennan 3, McComb 1, Robinson 5, Kempton 8, Parks 0, A. Johnson 4.

LAKE CITY — Dvorak 9, Carlson 6, K. Maryon 2, Rieken 10, Rewers 6, O. Maryon 0, Meier 5, Simpson 0.

BOYS: While it wasn’t intended to happen that way, the payoff for the Post Falls Trojans might have come in the form of early foul trouble.

With early foul trouble for Wyatt Millsap and Zach Hillman, the Trojans went into their bench and got strong showings from Cameron McKeown and Tanner McCliment-Call, who combined for 11 points in the win.

“Things worked out really well for us,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “We were in foul trouble in the first with Zach (Hillman) and Wyatt (Millsap), which was good with Lewiston coming into town. We weren’t worried about Lewiston coming into town during the game, but it was nice to be able to get them out. I was happy with our overall effort. I thought our guys off the bench came in and played hard. It’s my ninth year in this league, and it doesn’t matter where you’re playing, if you get a road win, you sleep better that night. You just do.”

Jake Pfennigs had 14 rebounds and seven points for Post Falls (10-5, 2-0 5A IEL), which hosts Lewiston today at The Arena.

“Coming in here, I know Lake City is inexperienced and learning,” McLean said. “But the guys they have on the bench with coach (Jim) Winger, (assistant) coach (Kelly) Reed and coach (John) Astorquia, I knew they were going to try something and throw some things at us. Our guys answered and I was happy with how they played. We did enough to get through a league game.”

James Carlson scored 18 points for Lake City (3-11, 0-4), which hosts Glacier today.

“I’m really pretty pleased with my kids in league play,” Lake City coach Jim Winger said. “In the Fish game, we kind of let it get away from us. The other games we’ve been right there. The problem is we’re playing two teams — a really tough opponent and ourselves — kind of shot ourselves in the foot with the one aspect of the game when we’re doing some things well, and do some things poorly. As far as what we’re doing, and how hard we’re playing, I think we’re doing a really good job. When you’re playing a well-oiled machine like Post Falls has been the last two years, you’ve got to be perfect from start to finish. I thought in the second half in particular, we battled back. It’s just frustrating with the kids and we want to win. But I think we’re improving and we’re getting better.”
