HAYDEN — A fire started inside a motorhome at the gas pumps Saturday afternoon, but with quick action by the owner of the Winnebago RV, a scary situation was short-lived.

The fire started shortly after 2 p.m. at the Holiday gas station, corner U.S. 95 and Prairie Avenue.

Kevin Croffoot, battalion chief for Northern Lakes Fire District, said the fire was caused by some rugs next to a pilot light. He said the owner of the vehicle, who declined to comment to The Press, pumped some fuel and then noticed smoke coming from inside the RV. He said the man was concerned about his dog that was still inside at the time.

"His dog wouldn't cross over to the door because the fire was between him and the dog so he threw the rugs to the back, got the dog out and shut the door," Croffoot said. "Which is good because if he had left the door open it probably would have really went up."

Croffoot said closing the door helped smother the fire and by the time fire crews arrived the rugs were smoking but the fire was out.
