Whitefish’s bicycle and pedestrian master plan will get an update this year.

The current plan was adopted in 1998 and was later updated in 2003 and 2007. The plan has laid solid groundwork for the creation and maintenance of the current bicycle and pedestrian paths in town, according to public works director Craig Workman.

“Over the past two decades there have been significant changes in the field of bicycle and pedestrian planning,” Workman said. “These changes include a greater awareness of the different type of bicyclists, and an effort to design facilities that can be used by people of all ages and abilities.”

City Council Jan. 19 approved a contract for up to $40,000 with WGM Group to update the plan.

The goal of the plan update, according to Workman, is to provide the city with a series of actions that can be strategically implemented including adding to the city’s existing system of trails to create a complete walking and bicycling network throughout the city.
