Legion baseball: Mariners drop tourney finale to Braves in 11 innings

POLSON — Livingston scored three runs in the top of the 11th inning to down the Mission Valley Mariners A 7-4 on Monday in the American Legion baseball championship game of the Firecracker Tournament.

The Braves were led by Buck Spallone, who tripled, homered and drove in four runs. He finished the day going 3 for 6.

Mission Valley tied the contest at 4-all by scoring a run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Anthony Jones and Brendan Blood had two hits each for Mission Valley, which had won three straight in tournament play.

Blood’s double was the lone extra base hit for the Mariners.

Tyson Petticrew pitched 8 1/3 innings for the Mariners, allowing seven hits, striking out nine and walking one batter. He gave up the home run to Spallone.

John Becker went eight innings for the Braves. He allowed five hits, struck out nine and walked a batter.

Both teams struggled with errors, the Mariners totaling 11 to six for the Braves.

Both teams stranded 10 base runners.

Mission Valley hosts the Bitterroot Bucs on Wednesday for a conference doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.

POLSON — In a battle of No. 2 teams from pool play at the Firecracker Tournament, the Dillon Cubs slipped by the Glacier Twins B.

Skylor Warner turned in a solid mound performance for Glacier, going six innings. He held the Cubs to four singles, struck out six batters and issued one walk.

Kohlton Starkel pitched six inning for the Cubs to pick up the win. He held the Twins to two singles — Trey Gates and Matt Morrison. He fanned two hitters and walked three.

Gabe Hupp pitched the final inning for Dillon.

POLSON — The Libby Loggers ended the Firecracker Tournament on a high note by blasting the Clark Fork Vipers.

Brady Bateman, 3 for 3, drove in five runs.

Shayne Walker pitched a 4-hitter and helped his cause at the plate by going 3 for 4 with three RBIs. He scored three times.

Walker fanned five batters and walked two in four innings.

Tim Carvey, 2 for 4, and Tanner Schatz, 2 for 4, both had three RBIs.

Erik Lauer and Collin Johnson both drove in two runners.

Libby opened that contest with a nine-run first inning and followed with six runs in the second and seven in the third.

In a game that ended late Sunday, Livingston used a 10-run second inning to bury the Loggers.

Braydan Thom had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs for the Loggers.

Libby returns to league play Wednesday with a doubleheader at the Kootenai Valley Rangers starting at 4 p.m.

Chaffy 11, Lakers AA 2

PULLMAN, Wash. — In championship play on the final day of the Palouse Summer Series on Sunday at Washington State University, the Kalispell Lakers AA scored first but it was all Chaffy after that.

Chaffy tallied seven runs in the second inning to put the game away.

Joe Broughton doubled and drove in two runs for the Lakers.

Spencer Pisk also doubled.

Patrick O’Connell and Leif Erickson had the Lakers’s other two hits, both singles.

Kalispell returns to conference play today hosting Medicine Hat for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. at Griffin Field.
