Troy School District was recognized with two awards this year in recognition of past achievements and future promise.

The W.F. Morrison Elementary School in Troy was awarded the Montana Behavioral Initiative (MBI) Gold Status on June 22 and the Troy School District was named ‘Promising Practice’ for their Character Education Program by Character Education Partnership in early May.

The Montana Behavioral Initiative has established an awards process to recognize MBI teams and schools who meet their standards for promoting positive school climate and school safety by utilizing the MBI process.

The school received silver the last two years, but this is the first year they received gold.

“I think a lot of people worked hard for a long time and we were really proud of ourselves, and it’s really great to look back and see what we’ve accomplished,” Diane Rewerts, principal at W.F. Morrison Elementary School, said.

The district was also one of 10 school districts in the country and the only district in the state recognized by the Character Education Partnership as a Promising Practice.

The school was recognized as a Promising Practice because of their Elementary Leadership Program, which involved sophomores and senior high school students spending an hour each day tutoring elementary kids with physical education, art and Spanish.

“It was a neat program, our high school kids really, really enjoyed it and they built some really good relationships with elementary kids,” Jacob Francom, superintendent of Troy School District, said.

The tutoring program aimed to mentor leadership and team building skills.
