COEUR d’ALENE — An era of Hawaiian shirts, khaki shorts and Ford sales is about to end.

The Ford sales will go on, but after 30 years handing keys to customers at Lake City Ford — usually decked out in flowery shirts and comfortable shorts, no matter how deep the snow was — Tom Addis is selling the dealership to Jim Parker.

“It’s time,” Addis told the Press Thursday.

The price was not disclosed.

Parker, who owns the Subaru dealership right next to Lake City Ford and the Parker Toyota dealership just down U.S. 95 on the corner of Kathleen Avenue, said the sale was a natural fit for the two families who are friends rather than rivals. He explained that both families have always been heavily involved in the community, and their business and civic values are virtually the same.

“It’s not like there’s a big change,” Parker said. “I think it’ll be pretty seamless. It’s awesome and we’re eager to get in there and start getting our feet wet.”

Parker said the Ford dealership was particularly attractive because of its proximity to the Subaru and Toyota stores, and because Ford’s heavy duty truck line will add value to his company’s existing inventory.

Addis said the sale should be completed sometime in the first half of August. Employees of both companies have been informed, he said.

Addis, 76, has been a Ford dealer for 42 years. He bought his first Ford dealership in Chewelah, Wash., in 1975. In 1986 he bought the Dodge dealership in Coeur d’Alene and, four months later, purchased the Ford dealership here. Addis said he was attracted to the area by a large resort that was just opening on the shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene. He saw potential for a dynamic marketplace.

“I told Lynn [Tom’s wife], ‘This Hagadone guy gets it. This is where we need to be,’” he said.

In selling the dealership and its real estate to Parker, Addis said his workforce of about 70 employees will be treated well.

“For 33 years Parker has won the Toyota customer service award,” Addis said. “You can’t have satisfied customers without satisfied employees.”

Addis praised Parker personally and professionally while brandishing a little bit of his well-known Ford pride.

“We know he’s very community minded, a good family man and a good businessman,” Addis said before adding, “even though he drives those funny little foreign cars.”
