LA JOLLA, Calif. — A pair of local golfers teed it up with some of the world’s best junior golfers, staying in contention after the first of three days at the IMG Academy Junior World Championships on the South Course at Torrey Pines Golf Course on Tuesday.
Libby’s Ryggs Johnston is currently in a tie for 53rd place after a 4-over-par round of 76 in the opening round. He started off slow, shooting 5-over through 12 holes, but was able to calm his nerves and birdie three of the final six holes to stay within six strokes of the lead.
Six golfers are tied at 2-under-par for the lead, including two golfers from Southern California likely unfazed by the daunting golf course.
Bigfork’s Joseph Potkonjak is in a tie for 172nd after only finding one birdie in his first round, on the par-5 sixth.
In the girls’ championship, Bozeman’s Hannah Rosanova is tied for 138th at 27-over-par after the first round at the Legends Course of La Costa Resort & Spa. Yuka Saso of the Philippines leads the field by two shots at 4-under. The top American golfer is tied for ninth at even par.
