Joann Mildred (Cross) Smith passed away July 2, 2016, at the Kadlec Medical Center in Richland, Washington. She was 84.

She was born Sept. 21, 1931, in Somers. Joann grew up there and graduated from Flathead County High School.

She met Bernard L. Vickhammer and married him in 1949. They had three sons, Randy, Daryl and Steve. Joann was a devoted wife and mother and adored her sons and the neighborhood friends. After the boys were raised, she and Bernard divorced after 26 years.

Joann moved to Hermiston, Oregon, to be near her sister Helen. She worked as a waitress at Smitty’s Pancake House, where she met Bob Smith. They dated, then married in September 1980. She then worked at the Payless Department Store until her retirement. They would have been married 36 years this fall.

Joann loved music, especially country. Patsy Cline and Ray Price were her favorites. She played piano and organ music and loved to read, cook and sew. She also collected Holiday Barbie dolls.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Mabel Cross; her sisters, Pat Smith and Helen Huso; her brothers, Jim and George Cross; her former husband, B.L. Vickhammer; and her husband, Bob Smith.

She is survived by her brother and his wife, Les and Eva Cross of Oak Harbor, Washington; her sons and their wives, Randy and Marilyn Vickhammer of Kalispell, Daryl and Peggy Vickhammer of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and Steve and Joanie Vickhammer of Scottsdale, Arizona; plus many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services for Joann and Bob will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 16, at the C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Vickhammer home in Evergreen.
