AUTO RACING: Riddles solve Montana 200 qualifying, take top spots
DAVID LESNICK | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 8 years, 4 months AGO
It was a different car, but the same result for Owen Riddle.
The 30-year old super late model driver from Naches, Washington, was the top qualifier again Friday evening for the 26th annual Montana 200 at Montana Raceway Park.
Riddle was the fourth car out and set the standard to beat with a fast lap time of 12.918 seconds. The track record is 12.87.
His top speed was 69.670 miles per hour.
Riddle’s first lap was 12.96.
He was the lone driver to post two times under 13 seconds.
Last year, Riddle had a top time of 13.075 in the qualifying and followed that with a wire-to-wire victory in the 200-lap main event. It was his first 200 win.
“It’s a great race,” Riddle said of the 200.
“The people make it a great event and it’s a beautiful place to come.”
The car Riddle drove last year was totaled at the Fall Classic.
“It wasn’t worth saving,” he said. “So we had to race a new one.”
This marks the third outing in the new No. 10.
He finished second in the Apple Cup earlier this summer with it, but crashed during a practice session before the Summer Showdown at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington, last month.
“That happened two weeks ago,” he said.
“Two weeks felt like a long time getting it ready.”
Riddle will be joined in the front row for tonight’s finale by his brother Tayler, who is 26.
Tayler was the 18th car in the qualifying order out of the 28 entries on Friday. After two practice laps he was timed in 13.06 and 12.947. His second run was the second fastest of the session.
“A couple of times,” Owen said of the two brothers holding down the 1-2 spots for a main event.
“Usually it’s the other way, he’s 1 and I’m 2.”
And with both leading the field time wise, Owen said “there will be a lot of bench racing (Friday night and Saturday morning),” between the brothers.
“Third year in a row,” Owen said of having the top qualifying time for the 200.
“I had a faster time the year Garrett Evans won it.”
That was in 2014. Evans is from East Wenatchee, Washington.
Owen finished 17th that year, completing 100 laps.
Tayler Riddle was third in the qualifying here a year ago.
Then in the main event ...
“We were running 1-2 for the first 100 laps,” he said of being second to his brother.
After a mix up during the final 100, he was sent to the back of the field for a restart.
“I made it back to fourth,” he said.
On racing against his brother, he said: “It’s a little frustrating. You don’t want to ruin his chances of winning and you hope you never get into it with each other. You don’t want any bad blood out there. Racing is hard enough without getting into the back of somebody. I guess ... it’s just quarter-mile racing.”
This marks Tayler’s third race of 2016. He won the Summer Showdown last month.
“A lot better in practice (on Thursday, than Friday in qualifying),” he said of how his car handled.
But he expects it to be in winning form tonight.
Jeremy Doss of Upper Lake, California, was the other drive to slip under the 13-second mark in the qualifying. He clocked times of 13.06 and 12.960.
His second time was the third best.
The top 14 times guaranteed those drivers a spot in the 200 lineup for the main event. That list includes three veteran Kalispell racers.
Alex Lessor, a Montana 200 runner-up a couple years ago, was sixth with a 13.080. Agni Howell was eighth, 13.094, and Brock Denney 10th, 13.119.
Evans was 16th in the Friday qualifying, 13.198, and 2011 Montana 200 winner Shane Mitchell was 19th, 13.229.
Drivers also had a chance in a late Friday night event to make the 200 field.
A last chance qualifier will complete the field at 6:15 on Saturday. Driver introductions are set for 7 p.m. with the main event beginning at 8:15.
