A Kalispell man is facing felony assault with a weapon charges after reportedly pointing a loaded handgun at someone.
The charges were filed against Thomas James “TJ” Sorkness Jr., 22, July 8, in Flathead District Court.
Police responded to a report of a physical disturbance involving a weapon at a Ninth Avenue West residence in Kalispell. According to court documents, several witnesses said Sorkness entered the residence looking for a woman who was not present. Sorkness allegedly held a handgun with another gun tucked in the waistband of his pants. The victim confronted Sorkness and asked him to leave when Sorkness reportedly pointed the handgun directly at the victim, causing the victim fear of “serious bodily injury,” according to court documents.
Sorkness is said to have then left through the front door and fired a shot in the air, fleeing the area on foot. Officers located Sorkness’ vehicle and searched the area. More than an hour later, an officer recognized a shirtless man, who appeared from behind a fence, as Sorkness. Sorkness reportedly tried to elude police by running down First Street West and attempting to jump over a fence when police arrested him.
Sorkness was conditionally released from jail on $40,000 bond.
He faces a maximum term of 20 years in Montana State Prison and a maximum fine of $50,000.
Arraignment is set Aug. 4.
