Legion baseball: Mavericks roll by Lakers, 8-1

The Missoula Mavericks took an early lead and never looked back in downing the Kalispell Lakers 8-1 on Sunday afternoon in AA American Legion baseball conference action at Griffin Field.

Missoula, outhitting the Lakers 14-6, scored twice in the first and second innings for a 4-1 advantage.

Missoula added a run in the fourth and seventh innings and two more in the sixth.

Andrew Schleusner, 2 for 4, doubled twice, drove in a run and stole two bases for the Lakers.

Jacob Halland also went 2 for 4 for Kalispell.

Missoula stranded nine base runners to Kalispell’s eight.

Jonathan Mitchell, 3 for 4, drove in three runs to drive Missoula.

Dylan Bankley went seven innings on the mound for Missoula. He gave up five hits, struck out just as many and walked two batters.

Kalispell continues with league play today, hosting Medicine Hat for a single game beginning at 4 p.m.

WHITEFISH — Sam Elliott pitched six innings to pick up the win and also led the Kalispell Lakers’ hit parade by going 3 for 3 and driving two runs in the victory at Memorial Park, which was the regular-season finale for both teams.

Kalispell used a three-run third inning to break a scoreless tie and came through with another three runs in the seventh inning.

Glacier scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to trail 4-3.

Jaycob Serrano, 2 for 4, was Kalispell’s other top hitter. Elliott and Clayton Jaques doubled for the Lakers.

For Glacier, Vinny Smith was 3 of 4, which included a double. James Sampson-Keck and Jesse Walburn both went 2 for 4.

Kalispell and Glacier (33-20 overall, 19-6 league) will compete in the district tournament, which starts Wednesday in Florence.

EUREKA — The Missoula Mavs and Kootenai Valley Rangers completed regular-season action in A play with the vistors sweeping the doubleheader.

Sam Hannay led Ranger hitters in the opener, going 3 for 4 and driving in a run. Hannay and Dawson Henrie doubled once.

Kootenai Valley had just five hits in the second game, singles by Chet McCully, James Dunn, Quade Anderson, Hank Dunn and Connor Harmon.

The Mavs and Rangers will head to Florence for the district tournament, which begins Wednesday.
