Bayley romps to Rosauers win

LIBERTY LAKE — One day after posting a record-setting 59, amateur Derek Bayley of Rathdrum shattered another record in winning the 29th Rosauers Open Invitational golf tournament Sunday at MeadowWood Golf Course.

Bayley, the former Lakeland High star and a rising junior at Washington State, won in almost Tiger-esque fashion, finishing with a record 27-under-189 for the 54-hole tournament, and winning by eight shots over PGA professional Tony Robydek (66-66-65—197) of Pro Golf Discount in Tacoma, Wash., and by nine over pro Reid Martin (66-62-70—198) of Legion Memorial Golf Club in Everett, Wash.

“It’s kind of hard to sink in exactly what I did,” said Bayley, who followed up rounds of 67 and 59 with a 9-under 63 on Sunday. “Obviously I knew I had the game. If I was surprised by anything, it was how calm I could keep myself the past few days, especially yesterday (Saturday), not having been in that situation before. Today, if any round was easy, today was easy because ... I’ve done this before.”

Bayley’s 59 on Saturday, his personal best by six shots, and the lowest 18-hole score in a Pacific Northwest PGA major, gave him a two-shot lead heading into Sunday’s final round.

On Sunday, Martin drew even with Bayley after three holes. Bayley birdied the fourth, and was never headed again. An eagle on No. 7 bumped Bayley’s lead up to 3, and he led by four at the turn. Bayley finished with six birdies, two eagles and a bogey. He got to 28-under after a birdie on 16, then dropped a shot with a bogey on the par-3 17th before parring the final hole.

Bayley, who carded nines of 32 and 31, became only the second amateur to win the Rosauers.

“I’m not surprised in the slightest that I won the golf tournament,” Bayley said. “That’s why I was there. It’s not like pros to amateurs; everyone’s a human being. Even if it was a PGA Tour event, they’re pros too. They’re just another guy; they’re just better than what you’re used to playing against. So I just brought that mindset, especially today, that no one’s going to beat me.”

Asked if the Rosauers marked the biggest victory in his young career, Bayley said he hadn’t given it much thought, also recalling a victory in a tournament WSU hosted at Palouse Ridge in Pullman last fall.

“To do it like this, and to win by eight strokes against a really good field, and the best pros in the area, is certainly pretty special,” Bayley said. “I made two bogeys in 54 holes, and both were 3-putts. It doesn’t get much less-stressful than that.”

Bayley played in a couple of events earlier in the week in California. He played “decent” in a U.S. Amateur qualifier in Marysville, Calif., then a little bit better in the Trans-Mississippi tourney at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.

At the Trans-Mississippi, “I missed a 4-footer and missed the cut by one,” Bayley recalled. “(Saturday) I had a 4-footer for 59 and I said, ‘I’m not doing that again.’”

Bayley flew back to Spokane on Friday morning, giving him just enough time for the afternoon tee time he requested for the first round of the Rosauers.

“After the first round, ‘OK, I’m in a good position,’” Bayley said. “My goal for the second round was to put myself in a position to win, and I finished it off today.”

Amateur Reid Hatley (Hayden Lake Country Club) shot 66-67-70—203 and finished ninth. Three other locals tied for 20th — Billy Bomar of Prairie Falls (70-72-66—208), Russell Grove of Twin Lakes Village (70-70-68—208) and Taylor Porter of Avondale (74-65-69—208).

Amateur Kyler Gable of Avondale (73-67-69—209) and Jess Wingett of The Highlands (72-67-70—209) tied for 29th.

Steve Prugh held the previous scoring record with a 21-under 192 at Indian Canyon in 2009.

As the top-finishing pro, Robydek took home the first-place check of $11,000. As an amateur, Bayley earned $750 in pro shop merchandise.

Bayley had little time to celebrate his win. He had to get up early today to travel to Walla Walla for a 12:50 p.m. tee time at another tournament — the Pacific Northwest Golf Association Men’s Amateur, which runs through Saturday.
