A sleeping Marion teenager awoke in time to escape a fire Monday morning that destroyed a modular home.

The home along Lower Lost Prairie Road was engulfed in flames when firefighters from the Marion Fire Department arrived.

Marion Fire Chief Katie Mast said while the family was home when the fire began, no one was injured.

“Their teenage son was in his room sleeping at the time and everyone else was out and about,” Mast said. “It’s a complete loss of the structure. The family lost everything.”

Mast said the boy woke to the fire and was able to get out of the home by himself.

Mast said the department was called to the fire just a few minutes past 7:30 a.m. By the time firefighters reached the scene, the building was completely covered in flames.

She said metal siding along the home created residual heat that was difficult to suppress. An excavator was used to pull the building’s siding apart to slow the fire.

Smith Valley and West Valley fire departments also responded.

Mast said 12 emergency responders worked until 1 p.m. to put out the flames.

“Being a volunteer fire department, it was hard on a Monday morning to find enough responders — everyone is out at their day jobs,” Mast said. “But we were very grateful to West Valley and Smith Valley for helping out and that no one was harmed.”

Mast said she connected the family with the Red Cross for support. She also said neighbors and family members were at the scene helping care for the family.

The Marion Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire.
