The Whitefish School District is asking the city for a conditional-use permit to build a greenhouse and transform space around Whitefish High School into a working farm and outdoor classroom space.

The Whitefish Planning Board will hold a public hearing Thursday on the request.

The greenhouse and accompanying garden and native plant areas would be developed on 11.3 acres that currently is green space just north of the high school. Memorial Park borders the property to the north, with residential homes to the west, the school’s athletic fields to the south and the high school track/football field to the east.

Vehicle access to the site for delivery of materials and equipment would be from East Fourth Street.

Parking would be in the existing parking lots north of the high school entrance.

The city planning staff is recommending approval of the conditional-use permit.

IN OTHER business the Planning Board has two other public hearings scheduled.

Justin Lawrence of Lakestream Outfitters is requesting a zoning text amendment to add recreational guides and outfitters as a permitted use in the WF-2 secondary business district, as well as a new definition for recreational guides and outfitters.

Lawrence, the owner of Lakestream Outfitters, initiated the zoning text amendment because he wants to relocate his guiding, outfitting and fly shop business, currently located on Central Avenue in downtown Whitefish, to a site that can better accommodate parking for trucks with trailers and display needs for rafts.

Guiding and outfitting businesses are considered personal services in the zoning code and are not listed in the allowed uses of the secondary business district.

The city of Whitefish wants to rezone a parcel recently annexed into the city from county to city one-family residential zoning. The property is located at 1436 W. Lakeshore Dr.

The board meets at 6 p.m. Thursday at the interim City Hall, 1005 Baker Ave.
