FLORENCE — The Glacier Twins hit around in the first inning, scoring six runs to lead off an 11-1 rout of the Libby Loggers in the first round of the Montana/Alberta American Legion Western A district baseball tournament on Thursday.

James Sampson-Keck, the third batter to the plate for the Twins in the first game of the tournament, roped a double to right field to score Tristin Steinwand and start the scoring. Sampson-Keck came through home just a few batters later on a two-run single from AJ Wetsch. Greyson Bistodeau and Troy Murphy would pick up RBIs in the next two at-bats to keep the scoring going.

The Twins would add four more runs in the second inning, the first two scoring on an error and a wild pitch before Murphy slapped a single to centerfield to score two more. Glacier scored another in the third, on a single from Vinny Smith, but reached just one runner in the final three innings.

Wetsch shut down any opportunities for the Loggers, holding Libby hitless until the sixth inning while striking out four batters and inducing a pair of double plays. The Loggers reached four batters in the seventh inning, a single from Collin Johnson scoring Braydan Thom, but had to settle for one run and an early end to their first round contest.

Murphy was 2 for 2 with a walk and three RBIs for the Twins as Steinwand and Smith also picked up a pair of hits.

Seth and Brady Bateman each went 1 for 3 and Johnson 1 for 2 from the plate for the Loggers.

Glacier will play the host Bitterroot Bucs today for a chance to play in the semifinals. Libby falls to loser-out action versus Mission Valley in the morning.

Lakers 5, Mavericks 4

FLORENCE — The Kalispell Lakers held off a late charge from Missoula, working out of a jam in the ninth inning to hold on for a victory.

The Lakers got rolling in the second inning, reaching base safely in five-straight at-bats to score three runs for an early lead.

Despite giving up a run in the third, Kalispell cruised into the later innings, increasing its lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh.

That lead started to slim as the game stretched on, the longer tournament format testing the pitching depth of the Lakers.

Missoula scored twice in the eighth inning, reaching its first four batters, and loaded the bases with one out in the ninth.

The Lakers forced one out at home, but gave up a single in the next at-bat, narrowing the lead to one run and putting the go-ahead runner on first.

Two pitches later, the threat was over, with the Mavericks grounding out to the pitcher.

Clayton Jaques was 3 for 4 with an RBI and Drew Scherrer picked up the win on the mound for the Lakers.

Kalispell will play the Bitterroot Red Sox in today’s second round.

FLORENCE — The Bitterroot Bucs scored four runs in the second inning and held on to beat Mission Valley.

The Mariners threatened several times — pushing a runner to third base in the second, third and fourth innings — with nothing to show for it until the seventh. Karsen Krebs led off with a single and worked his way to third, when a single from Bransen Krebs knocked him in. Bransen advanced to second, but the Mariners struck out in the next at bat to end the rally.

Mission Valley had two runners on in the ninth only to fly out and ground into a fielders’ choice in its final two at-bats.

Jacob Harrod was 3 for 5 from the plate and Micah McClure had six strikeouts in a complete game in the loss for the Mariners.
