MATTAWA — Only 11 days remain until the annual Mattawa CommUnity Day, and organizers are focusing on details. But they are still accepting new ideas.

“Breakfast is all planned,” Mattawa Area Chamber of Commerce member Lois Thiede said. “We just need people to eat it.”

The free breakfast, which kicks off the July 30 gathering of townsfolk at 7:30 a.m., will feature pancakes, sausage links, fruit cups and drinks.

Chamber President Courtney Olson noted there is room for more participants in the 5K and 1 mile fun runs. It’s very easy to sign up online at runsignup.com/Race/WA.

The Chamber continues to build the parade. It encourages all types of entries, from single individuals walking to marching groups and from animals to farm machinery.

“We would like to really encourage kids to be in the Kiddie Parade,” Thiede said. “They can bring wagons, bicycles, tricycles, wear costumes or bring a pet. Or they can just be cute. Everyone loves seeing the kids in a parade. One daycare has signed up, but we know there are lots of other kids in the area.”

The parade’s grand marshals have been selected. They are Joel and Angelica Favela, owners of Favela’s Market.

Dancing horses, Mattawa’s two health clinics, the fire department, Little Chiefs of the police department and fire department, Distinguished Young Women, Think Tank Sanitation, Columbia Bank, and Re-Elect Judge Estudillo are a few of the parade entries.

After the parade, all activity will shift to Hund Memorial Park. There will be lots of fun things to do.

The fire department is setting up an obstacle course for kids. There will be bingo.

You’ve heard of beer pong?

Well MCD will have Wahluke Slope pong. You will be challenged to toss ping pong balls into Wahluke Slope AVA glasses or the boxes they came in. Prizes are grape and wine-related candies and items. There will be several information and food booths.

Afternoon entertainment will include a drama presentation by the youths from Iglesia Pentecostes del Dios Vivo de Mattawa, and there will be music by that church’s youth band and adult band.

A soccer juggling contest is being organized by Wahluke High School soccer players, and Think Tank Sanitation is providing prizes.

The Chamber will have MCD meetings at noon and 4 p.m. at the CBHA clinic building this Thursday. If you have an idea to share, the Chamber would like to hear it.
