LAUREL — Kalispell’s Ryan Porch attacked a tough course at Laurel Golf Club on Friday, firing eight birdies on a day most golfers struggled to make par to increase his lead to seven strokes after the second round of the Montana State Amateur tournament.

Porch was one of the first golfers off in the morning, taking advantage of the softer morning conditions. Only six golfers were at par or below in the second round, none teeing off after 8:03 a.m., with temperatures rising to 90 degrees and winds picking up from a lull to a occasional gusts and a steady presence after 1 p.m., when most of the leaders were off the course.

Porch opened with two birdies in his first five holes and, after a bogey on 16, birdied both 17 and 18 on his way in to make the turn at 3-under-par. He birdied the par-4 first hole and went birdie-birdie in his final two holes to close his round at 6-under 66, taking him to 10-under.

Whitefish’s Mark Mance, who entered the day in a tie for second, struggled to make up strokes in the second round, finding only one birdie, on the par-5 18th. Anaconda’s Caleb Stetzner, who was tied for second with Mance, was 7-over to fall off the pace, also only finding birdie on 18.

Kalispell’s Logan Iverson, who was two strokes back in a tie for fourth, also posted a 7-over 79 to fall 15 strokes off the lead into a tie for 13th.

Hamilton’s Eli Rogers made the biggest move to challenge Porch, leaving in the first group on hole one and making birdie on 8, 9 and 11 to shake off a bogey on the par-5 fourth and close at 2-under for the round. He sits at 3-under-par for the tournament, seven strokes back. Billings’ Jim Coleman had an up-and-down round posting four birdies and four bogeys to finish at even par and move into third at 2-under.

While high temperatures and wind sped up the course on Friday, thunderstorms are expected in the area overnight and a cooler forecast could make conditions ripe for low scores.

Porch and the other leaders will tee off at 1:24 p.m. with the sun expected to come out later in the day bringing traditional Eastern Montana gusting winds.
