LEWISTON — Dominic Conigliaro went 6 for 6 with a homer, three doubles and five runs batted in as the No. 3 seed Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen defeated the No. 2 seed Northern Lakes Mountaineers 11-2 in the first round of the class AA Area A (district) tournament Thursday at Lewis-Clark State College’s Harris Field.
Coeur d’Alene (12-22) advances to the semifinal round tonight at 5, where the Lums will face the top-seeded Lewis-Clark Twins (32-9), who beat the No. 4 Prairie Cardinals (13-30) 35-2 in seven innings. Northern Lakes (14-19) will play Prairie today at 1 in a loser-out game.
“Dominic Conigliaro showed why he was named player of the year in the IEL this year,” Lums coach Zach Clanton said. “He dominated and looked like a man amongst boys out there. He has been on an absolute tear.”
Conigliaro hit RBI doubles in the third and fourth innings, and added a solo homer in the eighth.
Leadoff hitter Nathan Phillips went 4 for 4 and scored three runs for the lums, and Reegan Jacobson was 3 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs.
“Nathan Phillips continued hitting everything he saw since moving the top of the lineup,” Clanton said. “He has been a spark plug and I think has done a great job of setting the tone since the move.”
Thomas Robinson struck out eight in 6 2/3 innings for Coeur d’Alene.
“Overall just a great team win. Best we have played all year and Tom Robinson did a great job of extending and helping us save some arms.”
