Twins advance to semis at Western A districts
The Daily Inter Lake | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 8 years, 6 months AGO
FLORENCE — The Glacier Twins pushed across two runs in the sixth inning to tough out a 4-2 win against the host Bitterroot Bucs on Friday at the Montana/Alberta American Legion Western A District baseball tournament.
Tristin Steinwand led off the sixth and reached on an error only for James Sampson-Keck to single him into scoring position in the next at-bat. Another error scored Steinwand and moved Sampson-Keck to third and Max Smyley pulled off a squeeze bunt in the next at bat to score a second run and give the Twins a 4-1 lead.
It was just enough to pull out the win. Trailing by the same score, the Bucs loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth inning and scored on a single from Jordan Schneiter one batter later.
But, defense backed up the Twins. AJ Wetsch picked up an assist from left field by quickly getting Schneiter’s single back to catcher Ryan Veneman to tag a second runner at the plate. Closer Jonny Sapa came in for the next batter and Veneman caught Schneiter stealing for a second out. Sapa then struck out the final batter to end the threat and the game, earning a save.
Colten Parker led the Twins at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a pair of RBIs. Grayson Bistodeau earned the win on the mound.
The Twins advance to play the Bitterroot Red Sox in the semifinals today, a rematch of last year’s district championship game. With a win the Twins would advance to the district championship for a third straight season.

Red Sox 7, Lakers 3
FLORENCE — The Kalispell Lakers started out quickly, scoring their first two batters, but couldn’t find timely hitting late falling to loser-out play with a loss to the Bitterroot Red Sox.
Ryan Symmes led off the game with a single and scored when Randy Stultz tripled two pitches later. Stultz would score two batters later and after a Symmes single scored another run in the second the Twins led 3-1.
Bitterroot broke loose in the fourth inning, however, slaping four singles in the fourth to score three runs, followed by a pair of doubles and two more runs in the fifth and two more singles and a run in the sixth. After just two hits in the first three innings, the Red Sox tallied 10 hits in four innings to pull ahead for good.
The Lakers threatened often but couldn’t come up with a timely hit to score any runs after the second. Stultz hit a second triple in the fifth with one out, but he was stranded after one runner was caught stealing and another teammate struck out. The same thing happened in the seventh after the first two batters of the inning singled and the eighth inning saw the Lakers reach two runners with one out only to strikeout and groundout in the next two at-bats.
Kalispell had one final chance in the ninth and had runners reach first and third with no outs, but the next three batters struck out looking.
Stultz was 4 for 5 with two Triples and an RBI and Symmes and Jaryon Venturini each had three hits.
