Fundraiser benefits fallen officers memorial
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 8 years, 6 months AGO
More than $30,000 has been raised so far for a memorial to honor Coeur d'Alene Police Sgt. Greg Moore as well as fallen officers nationwide.
The fundraising effort launched by Coeur d'Alene Mayor Steve Widmyer in May is more than $3,000 closer this past week thanks to Rathdrum McDonald's owners Tim and Terri Skubitz.
The McDonald's owners held a fundraiser July 16 during Rathdrum days and their grand re-opening, donating 27 percent of all proceeds for the day to the memorial fund. Police officers from around the county as well as local mayors participated in the event. Widmyer was presented with a check for $3,006.43 from the event.
"This was an amazing gesture by Tim and Terri that we can never forget, and we hope their volunteerism will serve as an example for others, especially business owners, who support this important memorial and would like to donate to its construction," Widmyer said.
The goal of the "$27 for K27" fundraiser is $750,000 and will add a water feature in McEuen Park in Coeur d'Alene to honor fallen officers. Moore was killed May 5, 2015, in the line of duty and K27 were his call letters. When the amount needed for the memorial is divided by 27, Widmyer said 27,777 individual donations of $27 would be required to build the memorial.
The water feature at McEuen Park will include three 8-foot-tall waterfalls, which will then run into a stream named "Thin Blue Line" to represent law enforcement. Widmyer said the stream will "meander around" with a pool at the end and an area for people to sit and reflect. Moore will be memorialized with the waterfalls, which will represent the mantra "respect, honor, remember." Each one will be respectively named “Respect Falls,” “Honor Falls and "Remember Falls.”
