GOLF: Libby's Johnston leads at Junior America's Cup

GUADALAJARA, Mexico — Libby’s Ryggs Johnston shot 3-under-par 69 on the first day of the Junior America’s Cup golf tournament on Tuesday at Guadalajara Country Club, tying for the lead with four other golfers from the Western United States, Mexico and Canada.
Johnston was at even par at the turn, posting two bogeys and two birdies on the back nine. He found his groove on the way in, shooting birdie on three of the first six holes. He bogeyed the par-3 eighth but answered with a birdie on the ninth to close his round.
Billings’ Joey Moore, who finished in the top 32 at the U.S. Junior Amateur last week, is tied for 21st after opening with a 1-over 73. Billings’ Caleb Trost is in a tie for 68th at 12-over and Bigfork’s Joseph Potkonjak is 72nd at 20-over.
Montana is in 15th place out of 18 at 10-over as a team. Southern California leads at 4-under and British Columbia and Utah are each at 1-under.
In the girls Junior America’s Cup at Del Rio Country Club in San Diego, the Montana team is in 17th place. Missoula’s Kylie Esh leads the Treasure State contingent in a tie for 54th at 12-over 84. Bozeman’s Hannah Rosanova is 62nd at 17-over and Bozeman’s Kameryn Basye and Butte’s Patricia Joyce are tied for 67th at 21-over.
Utah’s Kerstin Fotu leads the field at 1-under-par. Arizona leads the team race at 7-over-par, one stroke ahead of Southern California and four ahead of Southern Nevada.
