HELENA — Whitefish’s Coral Schulz birdied her last two holes to finish the first round of the Montana State Women’s Amateur at 2-over-par, one stroke back of the lead on Tuesday at Green Meadow Country Club.

The recent Whitefish High School grad, a two-time Class A state champion, handled the course pretty well on the opening day, struggling only on a pair of par-3s. She carded 5s on holes 9 and 16 while playing the rest of the course at 2-under-par.

Missoula’s Maggie Crippen, who led by four strokes at the turn, bogeyed the final three holes of her round but closed with the lead at 1-over.

Townsend’s Bailee Dexter and Park City’s Kyla Clancy are tied for third at 3-over 76. Kalispell’s Teigan Avery, tied for second after nine holes, bogeyed three of her final four holes to find herself in seventh place at 5-over 78.

Finishing earlier in the day, Condon’s Helene Michael leads the Senior Women’s Am, shooting 6-over 79 to hold a one-stroke lead after the first day. Montana City’s Mary Bryson is in second at 7-over and Hamilton’s Julie Embleton is third at 8-over. Libby’s Bobbie Lacklen is in a tie for seventh at 12-over.

The senior groups will again tee off in the morning for the second round with the women’s amateur beginning tee times at 12:30 p.m.
