HELENA — Missoula’s Maggie Crippen needed only to hold on during the final round of play at the Montana State Women’s Amateur golf championships on Thursday at Green Meadow Country Club, finishing at 2-over-par to win her second state amateur title by seven strokes.

Crippen, a senior at North Dakota State University, made just two birdies in her final round to close out the title, playing safe with a seven-stroke lead entering the day. The fast greens and long final layout caught nearly the entire field in the third round, with nobody closing the last day below par. Crippen bogeyed her first two holes, but managed to play the rest of her round at par, including a birdie on the 18th to cap her victory. Crippen also won in 2011.

Kalispell’s Teigan Avery, who won the last seven state junior titles before this year, made two birdies in her final three holes to finish with the low round of the day at 1-over, finishing the tournament 9-over-par in second place.

“The greens, you couldn’t get above the pin,” Avery said of the fast course. “You really had to know where to leave it. I started to get more familiar with the greens each day throughout the week, knowing where a smart miss would be on the green.

“I was a little disappointed I didn’t get the last birdie, but it felt nice to finish birdie-birdie-par and just have a nice round.”

The senior amateur was won by Helena’s Mary Bryson, who maintained her lead throughout the day to finish at 30-over-par with a two-stroke victory. Bryson, who also served as tournament director on her home course, closed her final round with a birdie to hold off strong round from Laurel’s Sue Matson and Missoula’s Jo Smith, each finishing in a tie for second at 32-over.

Libby’s Bobbie Lacklen finished in seventh place at 40-over and defending champion Karen Jacobson of Whitefish finished in eighth at 41-over.
