GUADALAJARA, Mexico — Libby’s Ryggs Johnston closed his final round at 1-over-par, finishing in a tie for fifth at 3-under-par in the Junior America’s Cup on Thursday at Guadalajara Country Club. Washington’s Ryan Maine won the tournament by two strokes at 8-under-par.

Johnston had an up-and-down start to his round, opening with a birdie on the first hole only to bogey No. 2 and fall back to even par. The same happened on the sixth and seventh holes until an eagle on the par-5 ninth sent Johnston into the turn at 2-under-par, challenging for the lead.

He made three straight pars on the way out but a bogey, par, double-bogey stretch kept him out of contention. He closed with three pars to card an over-par round for the first time in the tournament.

Maine, from Rockford outside of Spokane, recovered after he opened his first eight holes at 3-over-par, closing the last 10 with five birdies to run away with the victory.

Billings’ Joey Moore closed his final round at 2-under-par, answering a triple bogey on the par-5 12th with four straight birdies and an eagle to close his round. He finished at even par for the tournament in a tie for 10th.

Bigfork’s Joseph Potkonjak finished in a tie for 69th with Billings’ Caleb Trost, both at 31-over-par.

Montana finished in a tie for 15th out of 18 teams. Washington, led by Maine’s flourish, won the team title by one stroke at 9-under, closing the final day at 7-under to take the trophy.

The Montana girls finished 17th as a team in the girls’ Junior America’s Cup at Del Rio Country Club in San Diego.

Missoula’s Kylie Esh finished her final round 2-over-par, playing 20-over for the tournament to lead the Montana squad with a tie for 33rd. Bozeman’s Hannah Rosanova finished in 64th at 54-over, Butte’s Patricia Joyce in 66th at 56-over and Bozeman’s Kameryn Basye in 68th at 60-over.

San Diego’s own Brianna Navarrosa was the only girl at the tournament to play under par, the 13-year-old closing 1-under in the final round to win the tournament by four strokes at 2-under-par. The Southern California team took the team title by 15 strokes at 11-over.
