Kenneth Alden Green, 92

Kenneth Alden Green, Coeur d’Alene resident since 2006, passed away May 30, 2016. Ken was born on March 28, 1924, in Sacramento, Calif., to The Reverend and Mrs. Chester E. Green.

He was educated in Redlands, Calif., graduating from Redlands High School in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in a medical unit in the Burma-India theater. Upon his return from the war, he married Kathryn Marti on June 23, 1946, in Redlands, officiated by Ken’s father, Reverend Green. Ken and Kathryn moved to northern California, where he continued his education at the University of California, Berkeley, and earned a B.A. degree in psychology in 1948 and a Master of Social Work degree in 1950.

Returning to southern California, Ken began his counseling career at the Sierra Madre Lodge for Alcoholism and the Family Counseling Service of Los Angeles. He then served seven years as an assistant supervisor of the Los Angeles County Conciliation Court. In 1965, Ken joined the faculty of the California Polytechnic State University in Pomona, Calif., as coordinator of the social service program and was later appointed Dean of Counseling and Testing. Ken authored and taught the curriculum of the Parent Effectiveness Training Program for the National YMCA. After retirement from Cal Poly, he directed a peer counseling program for seniors in Claremont, Calif.

An avid birdwatcher, Ken was a member of the Audubon Society, serving as president of the Pomona Valley, Calif., chapter. He was an enthusiastic golfer, playing at age 90 in a local Coeur d’Alene league and with family members.

Ken’s immediate survivors include his wife of 70 years, Kathryn Marti Green; daughters Susan Green of Charlotte, N.C., Nancy Harper of Coeur d’Alene, and daughter and son-in-law Patty and Joe Bordelon of Coeur d’Alene; grandson Matt Coopersmith of Portland, Ore.; granddaughters Renee and Andrea Bordelon of Coeur d’Alene, and Leslie Coopersmith of Twin Falls, Idaho; and great-grandchildren Mikayla, Sarah and Jakob Adams of Twin Falls.

A family gathering to celebrate Ken’s life will be held at a later date. Interment will be at Hillside Memorial Cemetery in Redlands. Yates Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
