After a long season of hard work, local track and field athletes competed in their final meet of the year.

Class C

The Charlo boys’ track team has a recent history of dominating the Class C track and field championships. That athleticism made another appearance in Missoula this weekend at the state meet. While it was not a first place finish, the Vikings had an great weekend and ended up bringing home a third place trophy.

Leading the way for the Vikings was senior Michael Delaney, a Montana Tech football recruit. He placed in all of his events – third in the 100, fourth in the 200, and fourth in the 300 hurdles. This other two medals – both second place finishes – came in the relays, where he ran the anchor leg. Joining him in both relays were Landers Smith, Toby Odom, and Jared Doty.

Afterward, Delaney said he was happy about the improvements from last year’s meet. “It was great. All the hard work paid off after a disappointing [state meet] last year.”

Senior Dugan Runkel also finished his year off on a high note. He took third in the shot put and fourth in the discus. A third senior, Bridger Smith, took third place in the pole vault. He also competed in the javelin. Landers Smith, who ran on both relays, also finished just outside of the medal stand in the pole vault, taking seventh.

The Arlee boys scored 17 points at the state meet. Senior Isaac Desjarlais placed in three events. He took second in the 800, running a 1:59.90. The day before, he finished fourth in the 400. He also ran on the short relay team, which took fourth place. Joining him on that team was fellow seniors Harold Yocum and Aaron Perry, and sophomore Rylan Crawford.

Perry also competed in the high jump. He took sixth place, clearing six feet.

The Arlee 1600-meter relay team missed the medal stand by less than a second and took seventh place behind Twin Bridges. That team was made up of Yocum, Perry, Desjarlais, and Brian Baker.

The only Class C individual winner came from Arlee junior Carly Hergett. After finishing second in her heat during the prelims, Hergett came out Saturday and avenged that loss, winning the race by one millisecond to take home top honors. After having the fastest time in the state last year and not winning state, she was happy with the outcome this year. “It was awesome. It was redemption from last year,” she

said. Hergett also took third place in the triple jump and fourth place in the long jump.

Also scoring some big points for the Scarlets was sophomore Ashley Revis. She took second in the 100-meter dash and fifth in the 200. In the 400 she won her heat, but as she placed in the slower heat, her time did not place in the top six. Had she been in the last heat, things may have gone differently, as she was not too far off the pace. She ended up in ninth place.

Freshman Natalie Yocum ran the 800, 1600, and 3200-meter races. She was just outside of placing in all three events. She took seventh in the two mile, eighth in the mile, and ninth in the 800.

The Charlo girls only scored three points, but were close to placing in a few different events. Sophomore Brooklyn Foust ran an excellent race to take sixth in the two mile. She also ran on the long relay team, which took fifth place to score the other two points. On that relay, she was joined by Kara Tatukivei, Allie Delaney, and Cheyenne Nagy. Nagy also ran the 300 hurdles and finished in seventh place.

The Charlo short relay team also made the finals, but ended up in eighth place. Those runners were Kaitlin Cox, Delaney, Nagy and Tatukivei.
