Lakeside Dance Studio tells classic mermaid tale

Tales of mermaids and magical sea creatures are nothing new. Many people have written about what life might be like under the sea, swimming among mythical beings and seeing a world completely different from — but somehow still a part of — our own.
On Sunday, June 5, the Lakeside Dance Studio will present “A Mermaid Tale from Under the Sea,” a retelling of a classic story like audiences have never seen it before.
“I wanted to choose a show that was very happy and very summery and very fun,” said Lakeside Dance Studio founder and director Cara Campbell. “This is an upbeat and positive production anyone can enjoy.”
“A Mermaid Tale” follows the basic story of Disney’s adaptation of “The Little Mermaid,” but being a ballet, adds some unique twists and turns.
“It’s a lot of work, but I know it’s worth it,” said principal dancer Jade Dickerson, 14, who plays the part of Ariel. “It’s going to be one of the best productions we’ve ever done.”
Campbell founded the Lakeside Dance Studio in 2009, offering just a small selection of classes to dancers of all experience levels and ages. She said the school has now grown to include 70 to 80 students per semester, and offers gymnastics, karate, guitar and vocal lessons, and fine art classes and workshops.
Dickerson said she’s been dancing with the Lakeside Dance Studio since she was 8 years old, and has no plans to stop any time soon. She said part of what keeps her there is the challenge of learning new skills, but more important is the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere.
“Cara doesn’t care how you come in [to start classes],” Dickerson said. “No matter your size, or age, or skill, you’re welcomed here with open arms.
“I’m so thankful to Cara for everything since I’ve been here. If you want to take dance class, come to Lakeside!”
Lakeside Dance Studio offers year-round classes and activities. Campbell said registration is open now for the summer session, which will run mid-June through mid-August. Registration and tuition varies depending on the class. For more information or to register, visit www.lakesidedancestudio.com or call 406-250-1740.
“A Mermaid Tale from Under the Sea” will be performed on Sunday, June 5, at 4 p.m. at the Flathead High School Performance Hall in Kalispell. Tickets are $8, available in advance at the Lakeside Dance Studio, on U.S. 93 South in Lakeside, or at the door on Sunday.
