WEEKEND UPDATE: Shred Event

The Agency on Aging, AARP and United Way are sponsoring a Community Shred Event and veterans food drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Gateway Community Center’s west parking lot, 1203 U.S. 2 W., in Kalispell.

Bring a food donation and have your confidential documents shredded for free. Free refreshments will be provided. The event is open to the public. For more information, call 752-7266 or 758-5730.


Graduation days

The following commencement ceremonies are being celebrated across the valley this weekend. All events take place in the schools’ gymnasiums:

Today

• Stillwater Christian School — 6:30 p.m.

• Flathead High School — 7 p.m.

Saturday

• Bigfork High School — 11 a.m.

• Columbia Falls High School — 11 a.m.

• Glacier High School — 11 a.m.

• Whitefish High School — 1 p.m.


Renegade Runway

Whitefish Lake’s Renegade Runway show and summer kick-off take place from 6 to 8 p.m. today around the pool and pavilion at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake. This fundraising event for the Alpine Theatre Project is open to the public.

Local vendors will showcase their clothes, shoes, jewelry and more on 36 models. Guests can enjoy cocktails as they shop the showcased fashions.

VIP tickets are $100 and include access to the premium seating area, champagne and hors d’oeuvres, a Spa at Whitefish Lake sample bag, Renegade Runway T-shirt and more. Several raffles for vendor gift baskets and a split-the-pot also will be available.

National Trails Day

• Montana State Parks is hosting a Trail Work Party from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on Wild Horse Island at Flathead Lake State Park.

Volunteers will work alongside park staffers to remove brush from the trail corridor and clear debris from drains on the trail. Meet at the dock and boat ramp at the Big Arm Unit of Flathead Lake State Park at 9 a.m. for transportation to the island. Since space on the boat is limited, pre-registration is required. Availability is on a first-come, first-served basis.

 This event is contingent on weather. In case inclement weather prevents travel to Wild Horse Island, alternative trail work will be done at Big Arm. Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes, dress for the weather and bring sunscreen and a water bottle. Tools, gloves and lunch will be provided.

• Lone Pine State Park near Kalispell has a volunteer work day from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Choose from a variety of projects including trail maintenance, blocking social trails and fighting invasive weeds.

Members of conservation groups and parks agencies will be on hand to help. Tools will be provided and volunteers will be treated to a free barbecue lunch. Wear sturdy boots and bring work gloves if you have them. Meet at the north Foy’s Lake parking lot (across the road to Lone Pine State Park) to break into crews. Families are welcome.

Race to Remember

Gene Boyle — A Race to Remember takes place at 9 a.m. Saturday at Legends Stadium in Kalispell.

The run is an event to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease.

The event features a 5K run and half-mile walk/children’s race. Participants can preregister at https://runsignup.com/race?racld=29672. Race-day registration is allowed but a T-shirt will not be included with the $10 fee.

The half-mile stroll/children’s race is a race-day registration event. The fee is $5. T-shirts can be purchased for $10 at the field Registration opens at 8 a.m. for those not preregistered.

Museum opening

Libby’s Heritage Museum celebrates its opening day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday with presentations, demonstrations, face painting and live music throughout the day.

A new exhibit on the history of the W.R. Grace vermiculite mine and subsequent asbestos contamination will be highlighted.

For $10, you can dress in vintage accessories and have your photo taken in one of the museum’s four Model Ts.

The Heritage Museum will be open through Aug. 31, Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is by donation. For more information, call the museum at 406-293-7521.


DragonFlies

The DragonFlies dragon boat team has a fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Foy’s Lake near Kalispell.

Certified coaches will provide basic paddling instruction, then give you the opportunity to paddle in the dragon boat. The cost is $5. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be available for donations. For more information, call 406-579-6654.


Bear Fair

Swan Valley Bear Resources hosts an informational Bear Fair from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Rocky Mountain Roadhouse, 82616 Montana 83 in Bigfork.

The event includes presentations by representatives of the federal and state wildlife agencies, along with displays and demonstrations by a number of organizations and bear-related children’s activities.

A barbecue lunch will be available while supplies last. Drinks will be available for purchase.

Book festival

A festival of the book called “Chocolate, Wine, and a Good Book” takes place from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Grouse Mountain Lodge in Whitefish. Guests will enjoy refreshments, beverages and chocolate, meet with authors and see their new books.

The first In the Spirit of Dorothy Johnson Award will be given to Carol Buchanan.

A $10 donation is requested. There is no charge to authors and children.


Whitefish Review

 Whitefish Review has a release party for its “Change” issue (No. 19) at 7 p.m. Saturday with a celebration at Casey’s in downtown Whitefish. The evening will open with live music and a slide show of the changing glaciers of Glacier National Park.

Readings start at 8 p.m., beginning with a discussion by research ecologist Daniel Fagre on the Repeat Photography Project that displays of the receding glaciers. After short readings by local writers, author and scientist Cristina Eisenberg will read from her new book in progress on climate change. Eisenberg served as the lead editor of the special “Change” issue.

A $10 entry donation is requested to help with the publishing costs of the nonprofit journal.


Herron Half Marathon

The Herron Half Marathon (13.1 mile), 10K and 5 K Races are Sunday at Herron Park near Kalispell.

Race-day registration is from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. The half marathon starts at 9 a.m., 10K at 9:15 a.m. and 5K at 9:30 a.m.

The first 200 race participants will also receive free swag, complimentary snacks, coffee and electrolyte drinks at the race start/finish area.

Two aid stations on the course will also provide fluids, but bring your own water bottle. All proceeds from the race benefit Foy’s to Blacktail Trails.

Elk Foundation

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation’s annual barbecue and potluck starts at 1 p.m. Sunday at Lions Park in Kalispell on U.S. 93 South across from Rosauers. Brings a side dish or dessert to share, lawn chairs and beverage. RSVP to Kim Wold, 257-9110.


QRU Fundraiser

Lakeside QRU hosts its fourth annual fundraiser dinner from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Lakeside QRU/Ambulance building on Bills Road.

The Vista Linda-catered menu includes ham, scalloped potatoes, cole slaw, vegetable, rolls, dessert and beverage. The cost is $10 per person; children under 6 eat free. Tickets will be sold at the door.

The fundraiser includes a raffle for a variety of goods from local merchants.

QRU responders will be on hand. Proceeds go toward equipping a new ambulance.
