COEUR d’ALENE — You can’t ask for a better start to a final week of school for Lake City High senior left-hander Dominic Conigliaro.

On Tuesday night, it turned perfect.

Conigliaro struck out eight in a seven-inning perfect game for the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen in an 4-0 win over the Northern Lakes Mountaineers in a Class AA North Idaho League American Legion baseball game at Thorco Field.

“I realized it in the third inning,” Conigliaro said. “That’s when I first realized what was going on. I was just trying to work quick and work ahead. When I do that, whether that was with the fastball or curveball, it left me with a lot more options and kept them off balance. It’s a good way to start off the week. I think it was (teammate) Nathan Phillips that came up to me after the game and told me that was the last game I’d throw as a high schooler, which was kind of weird, but exciting.”

Northern Lakes beat Coeur d’Alene 8-7 in eight innings on Friday at Thorco Field. In order to shake up the batting lineup for Tuesday’s game, Conigliaro led off and Jarred Hall hit fifth. Last Friday, Conigliaro hit third, Hall fourth.

“I talked to (Coeur d’Alene assistant coach C.J.) Ketron a little bit at school and he thought he was going to have me bat leadoff,” Conigliaro said. “I like hitting leadoff. It was fun. I definitely wanted the ball on Friday night, but I understand that they wanted me to get some rest. But it definitely gave me some motivation to come out and prove what I can do against them.”

“Dominic was just filthy tonight,” said Coeur d’Alene assistant coach Cody Spencer, who along with Ketron, filled in for head coach Zach Clanton, who is finishing work this week at Wenatchee Valley Community College, where he was named head baseball coach. “He hit the strike zone and was 80 percent strikes. When you’re doing that, you’re going to be dominant. He’s been doing that all spring and just came into the (Legion) season sizzling.”

Hall finished 3 for 3 with a solo home run in the second inning, as well as a double and single for Coeur d’Alene (3-3, 1-1 NIL), which hosts Prairie in a doubleheader on Monday at 5 p.m.

Brett Stapleton and Grant Wade had two hits each for Coeur d’Alene.

“The guys have been hot and Jarred has been swinging a hot bat,” Spencer said. “It was just a good game by the entire team. We played great defense, and we hit and did everything we needed to do to win.”

Northern Lakes came close to hits in the first inning, but center fielder Tanner Criswell and second baseman Brett Stapleton took them away with nice defensive plays.

“(Tanner) Criswell made a great diving catch and Brett (Stapleton) made a great play up the middle,” Conigliaro said. “To be able to pitch to contact, it’s good to know you’ve got a solid defense behind you.”

“It was a heck of a ballgame,” said Northern Lakes president Jason Bradbury, who filled in for coach Al Bevacqua, who was out of town for work. “Dom’s a great pitcher, and we knew it was going to be tough. And he’s a tough pitcher. He goes down to state in 5A and threw a complete game. I love his tempo and he’s all around the plate. You’ve got to jump on him early, and we didn’t do that. And we’ve got to try and make adjustments and we hit the ball on a button a few times. You get those hits in the gap, it’s a different game. But it’s Dom’s night. He earned it.”

Tyler Blood struck out six in six innings for Northern Lakes (1-1, 1-1), which hosts a game in the School’s Out Slam on Friday at Gorton Field in Rathdrum.

“Tyler threw a great game,” Bradbury said. “He pitched a complete game himself and had us right in the game. We just couldn’t get anything going.”
