Northwest Montana is in for another round of thunderstorms today after a fast-moving system whipped across the south end of Flathead Lake Tuesday.
Forecasts from the National Weather Service predict the bulk of the storm activity today would again occur south of Flathead Lake.
Bob Nester, the senior meteorologist for the Weather Service’s Missoula office, said the most active portion of the storm was predicted to last from about 3 to 10 p.m. today.
“There might be some better potential for some hail with these storms, as well as some gusty winds and some brief heavy wind,” he said Tuesday afternoon. “Tomorrow will be a day where more people than not will have a chance to get some precipitation.”
On Tuesday, the weather station at Glacier Park International Airport hit a temperature of 90 degrees by late afternoon, breaking the high temperature record for the day (88 in 1926). The Weather Service predicted temperatures in Kalispell to reach 92 degrees by early evening.
Today’s high is forecast to hit 94 degrees, which would tie the record for June 8 that was set last year.
Nester said Tuesday’s relative humidities ranging from 30 percent in Kalispell to more than 50 percent in Missoula were unusual for the normally dry mountain valleys.
